The Peninsula Bangkok is the riverside hotel that puts the skyline in front of you rather than around you. It stands on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya in Khlong San, and its tower was shaped so that all 370 rooms and suites face the river and the city on the opposite side. The price of that view is that almost every outing begins with a boat ride, which the hotel handles well but which you should be comfortable with before you book.

Location and getting around
Being on the west bank is the defining fact of a Peninsula stay. The main business districts, the BTS Skytrain and most of the city's restaurants are across the water, so the hotel runs its own fleet: four boats modeled on rice barges, reserved for guests, shuttle to Taksin Pier at BTS Saphan Taksin from 6 a.m. to midnight on request, and to ICONSIAM every 30 minutes through the day. A complimentary tuk-tuk also runs to ICONSIAM, and the hotel keeps BMW 750e sedans and a helipad for its helicopter service.
In practice, a day in Silom or Sukhumvit means boat, then train. A late night on the far side after the last boat means a taxi over the bridge. What you gain is distance from the traffic and a calmer riverside compound to come back to. ICONSIAM, on the same bank, is also where Meridian Cruise boards its sunset and dinner sailings past Wat Arun and the Grand Palace, which makes an easy first evening from this hotel.
Rooms and suites
Of the 370 keys, 63 are suites. Entry rooms are about 46 square meters, in teak, Thai silk and marble, with a bathroom that has both a tub and a separate shower, and they sleep up to three. Balcony room categories run from the 4th floor up to the 35th, so the useful booking decision is height: the higher floors look further across the river. At the top of the tower the Thai Suite, the Terrace Suite with an outdoor whirlpool, the two-level Duplex Suite and The Peninsula Suite share the 36th and 37th floors. Accessible Deluxe Rooms are available.
Dining and bars
Dining here is spread along the riverfront rather than stacked in the tower. Thiptara is the Thai restaurant, with tables in teakwood salas in a riverside garden, a home-style menu led by Chef Luk and a Thai set dinner. River Cafe & Terrace is the all-day restaurant on the water, with buffets at breakfast and dinner, a seafood and grill buffet at weekends, and an à la carte menu through the day.
Afternoon tea is served in The Lobby, beneath tall windows, with a pianist most afternoons and a jazz trio on Friday and Saturday evenings. The River Bar faces the skyline across the water from late afternoon until midnight, with cocktails built on Thai botanicals, and the Pool Bar serves light dishes and drinks by the pool, with salas you can reserve. The hotel's boutique near the pier sells cakes, chocolates and seasonal mooncakes. Most venues ask guests not to wear beachwear, sportswear, robes or slippers, and Thiptara asks men for closed-toe shoes.
Unlike its neighbor across the river, the hotel has no MICHELIN-starred restaurant, so anyone planning a trip around fine dining will be crossing the river for it anyway.
Pool, spa and fitness
The pool is the hotel's other signature: three tiers stepping down toward the river over 88 meters, shaded by 12 traditional Thai salas. The Peninsula Spa is in a separate three-story Thai colonial-style building by the river, with private treatment suites, saunas, steam rooms and plunge pools. A fitness center, a tennis court and a pickleball court round out the facilities, and the hotel runs a daily program of complimentary wellness activities, including an early-morning alms-giving ceremony. Non-guests can buy a pool and dining pass, so the pool is not exclusively for residents.
Families and culture
The Peninsula Academy is where this hotel differs from many downtown towers. Its guided programs cover Thai cooking, Muay Thai, Thai massage, Thai painting, a herbal session and a long-tail boat tour of the old canals. For children aged 6 to 11 there is Junior Chef, a morning cooking class that needs two business days' notice and at least two participants. There is no dedicated kids' club listed on the official pages, so families with younger children should plan their own days around the pool and the boat trips.
Recognition
The MICHELIN Guide lists The Peninsula Bangkok with One MICHELIN Key. The hotel's own site cites a higher Key count, but we follow the guide's current page. The hotel also reports a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating.
Who it suits, and the alternatives
The Peninsula suits travelers who want a river view from every room without having to book a specific view category, families who will use the pool and the Academy, and anyone who wants a resort pace in the middle of the city. It is less suited to travelers who plan long evenings in Sukhumvit or Thong Lo, or who want to step out of the lobby into a neighborhood of shophouses and cafés.
- For history and serious dining on the east bank: Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok faces The Peninsula across the river and has 12 restaurants and bars, including a two-star French dining room.
- For a newer resort on the city side: Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, on Charoen Krung, is a low-rise, garden-set hotel about a 15-minute walk from Saphan Taksin BTS.
- For bigger rooms and longer stays: Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok starts every room at 60 square meters, each with a balcony and a small cooking station.
