Where to Find Rolled Ice Cream (Ice Cream Rolls) in Bangkok

Where to Find Rolled Ice Cream (Ice Cream Rolls) in Bangkok

Where can you find rolled ice cream in Bangkok? The one place you can count on is Ice Manias Cafe, a shop on Krung Kasem Road in the old part of the city that is dedicated to it; its Thai sign simply reads "i-tim phat", stir-fried ice cream, the Thai name for ice cream rolls. Beyond that, rolled ice cream is street food, made by vendors who move between night markets, so the best way to find it is to go where Bangkok's dessert stalls gather and look for the cold steel plate.

Here is what the dessert is, where the fixed shop is, and which markets to check.

What rolled ice cream is

Rolled ice cream, or ice cream rolls, is known in Thai as i-tim phat or ai-sa-krim phat: literally, stir-fried ice cream. It began as Thai street food around 2009, spread to neighboring countries, and by 2012 had become popular abroad, helped by videos of it being made.

The method is the attraction. A flavored milk-based liquid is poured onto an "ice pan", a stainless-steel surface chilled by a refrigeration unit to about minus 30°C. The vendor chops and works it with two spatulas, like stir-frying, adding fruit, cookies or chocolate, until it thickens. It is then spread into a thin layer and scraped up into rolls, which are stood upright in a cup and finished with toppings. The whole process takes around two minutes, so you can watch your own order being made.

Ice Manias Cafe: a dedicated rolled ice cream shop

Ice Manias Cafe is at 1452-1454 Krung Kasem Road, in the Wat Thepsirin area of Pom Prap Sattru Phai district. Its name in Thai, i-tim phat, tells you what it specializes in; the English part of its name, "The First Ice Cream Roll", is the shop's own description. Rolls are made to order on a cold plate at the counter, and the shop also serves them on waffles.

  • Getting there: the nearest rail station is Hua Lamphong on the MRT Blue Line, about 1.2 km south in a straight line. From the Old City, the shop is also within reach of Wat Saket and the Golden Mount.
  • Before you go: the shop posts updates on its Facebook page; check it for opening days and hours.

Night markets: where the street vendors are

Rolled ice cream stalls are mobile, and there is no official list of which market has one on a given night. Your best chance is a large market with a busy dessert section. Look for a vendor standing over a round or square steel plate with two scrapers; that is the ice pan.

Jodd Fairs Ratchada

Jodd Fairs, at 129 Ratchadaphisek Road in Din Daeng, is one of the city's biggest evening food markets, with long rows of food stalls under lights.

Train Night Market Srinagarindra

Talad Rot Fai Srinagarindra, in Prawet district in the east of the city, is a large night market with food, vintage stalls and shops. It is further out, so plan on a taxi or ride-hailing car.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

The Chatuchak Weekend Market is best known for shopping, but its food lanes also sell cold desserts, including coconut ice cream, which is a good fallback if no ice-roll stall is trading.

Other cold desserts to try instead

If you can't find a rolled ice cream stall, Bangkok has plenty of other frozen treats. Coconut ice cream, often served in a coconut shell or a bread roll, is sold at markets and food courts; the Pier 21 food court has a coconut ice cream stall, covered in our guide to what to eat at Terminal 21. For another Thai street sweet built around a show of skill, see our guide to where to buy roti sai mai, the spun-sugar candy wrapped in thin pancakes.
