The Island Bangkok
About
The Island is an all-day Thai restaurant and bar on Soi Samsen 4 in Phra Nakhon, a few lanes north of Khao San Road. It works less as a destination dinner than as a base for the day: breakfast in the morning, a plate of pad thai or a curry between sights, and a cocktail late in the evening, since it stays open from breakfast until well after midnight.
It suits first-time visitors doing the Old City on foot, backpackers and mid-range travelers staying around Banglamphu, and groups who need a menu broad enough for everyone. The restaurant pitches itself as a stop between Khao San Road, the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and the Old Town. This part of the city has few rail stations, so plan on walking, river boats or a taxi rather than the BTS.
The Thai menu
The kitchen sticks to the dishes most visitors come to Bangkok hoping to try: pad thai, som tum pounded in a mortar, tom yum kung, pad kra pow with holy basil, chicken with cashew nuts and a stir-fried crab curry with salted egg. Starters run from chicken satay with peanut sauce to vegetable spring rolls, tempura shrimp, steamed dumplings and vegetable gyoza.
Breakfast, sweets and drinks
Breakfast is served all day, with croissant sandwiches, pancakes with mango, toast sets, muesli and smoothie bowls. Dessert is mostly Thai and fruit-led, from mango sticky rice to fried banana with ice cream, alongside croffles and waffles. The bar pours fresh coconut and mango juice, shakes, wine and cocktails, including a house drink called Khao San Heat that adds a chili infusion to lime and tropical fruit.
Where to sit
Tables spill out along the lane at street level, and the restaurant promotes a third floor for its breeze and views.
Booking
The website takes table requests through a short form, which also handles larger parties. The restaurant also answers by phone and email.
