How Far Is Bali From Bangkok? Distance, Flight Time and Entry Rules

How far is Bali from Bangkok? About 2,960 kilometers (roughly 1,840 miles) in a straight line, measured between Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. A nonstop flight takes around 4 hours 20 minutes, according to AirAsia, and there is no practical way to make the trip overland, so flying is the only realistic option.

Bali is an island in Indonesia, south of the equator, while Bangkok sits in the middle of mainland Southeast Asia. Bali's airport lies almost 9 degrees south of the equator and Bangkok's almost 14 degrees north, a gap of more than 22 degrees of latitude, which is why Bali works as a separate beach trip rather than a side trip from Thailand. Below are the distances from each Bangkok airport, how the flight works, and the entry paperwork you need before you land.

The distance in numbers

RouteStraight-line distance
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS)About 2,960 km (1,840 miles)
Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS)About 2,990 km (1,860 miles)

We calculated these great-circle distances from the airports' map coordinates. Actual flight paths are a little longer, because aircraft follow air routes rather than a straight line. Some older articles give a figure of about 2,300 kilometers, which is too short.

Flying from Bangkok to Bali

Bangkok has two international airports, and flights to Bali leave from both. AirAsia's route pages list nonstop flights from Don Mueang, the low-cost hub north of the city, and Thai Airways sells Bangkok to Denpasar fares as well. AirAsia puts a nonstop flight at around 4 hours 20 minutes. Schedules and carriers change by season, so compare the airlines' own sites before you book, and check which airport your ticket uses: the two are far apart, and our guide to Suvarnabhumi versus Don Mueang explains the differences.

Allow for the journey to the airport too. Suvarnabhumi is outside the city limits in Samut Prakan, and Don Mueang is in the far north of Bangkok; our guides to getting between Suvarnabhumi and the city and getting to and from Don Mueang cover the rail and road options. AirAsia advises arriving at the airport two to three hours before an international departure.

Time difference

Bali is one hour ahead of Bangkok. A flight that leaves Bangkok at noon and takes about 4 hours 20 minutes lands in Bali at about 5:20 p.m. local time. Neither country uses daylight saving time, so the gap stays the same all year.

Entry requirements for Bali

Bali follows Indonesia's national immigration rules, and there are three things to sort out before you fly.

  • Visa. Many nationalities need a visa. The UK government's travel advice, for example, says British visitors can get a 30-day visa on arrival for tourism, and that Indonesia's official eVisa site also issues visas online before travel. Indonesia's eVisa site lists a visa exemption for citizens of ASEAN countries, including Thai nationals. Check your own nationality on the official site, evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
  • Arrival card. Indonesia's immigration service says all travelers must submit an arrival card within three days before arriving, through the All Indonesia system. It is free.
  • Bali tourist levy. Bali's provincial government charges foreign visitors a tourist levy of IDR 150,000, payable through its official Love Bali website or app.

Bali and Bangkok in one trip

Because the flight is more than four hours each way, Bali is best treated as its own leg rather than a weekend add-on. Bangkok works well as the long-haul gateway, with a few days in the city at the start or end. If you want beaches closer to Bangkok, the Thai islands are much shorter flights: see how far Phuket is from Bangkok by plane or how far Bangkok is from the beach. For another regional trip, our guide to getting from Bangkok to Vietnam covers flights under two hours.

If Bangkok is your base on either side of the trip, our Bangkok hotel guide covers where to stay.
