How far is Bangkok from Thailand? It is a very common search, and the short answer is zero: Bangkok is in Thailand. It is the country's capital and largest city, in the center of the country on the Chao Phraya River, so if you land at a Bangkok airport, you are already in Thailand.
The question usually comes from one of two places. Some people know the city and the country by different names and are not sure how they relate, and many more are really asking how far Bangkok is from the rest of Thailand: the beaches, the islands, the north and the old capitals. This guide answers both, with distances from Bangkok to the destinations visitors ask about most.

Bangkok is Thailand's capital
Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand, as the CDC's and the UK's TravelHealthPro country pages both note. It is also home to the Grand Palace, in the Old City. In Thai, the city is called Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, usually shortened to Krung Thep, and that is the name you will see on official addresses and some maps. Our guide on how to say Bangkok in Thai explains the full name.
Bangkok is also its own province-level area rather than part of a larger province, which is why addresses in the city end in "Bangkok" and a postcode rather than a province name. For more, see what province Bangkok is in and where Bangkok is on the world map.
How far is Bangkok from popular places in Thailand?
The table below gives straight-line distances from central Bangkok (Democracy Monument, in the Old City) to places visitors often combine with a Bangkok stay. Road distances are longer, sometimes by a wide margin, because highways follow the coast and the terrain.
| Destination | Region | Straight-line distance from Bangkok |
|---|---|---|
| Ayutthaya Historical Park | Central | about 66 km |
| Pattaya | East coast | about 100 km |
| Kanchanaburi | West | about 110 km |
| Hua Hin | Gulf coast | about 145 km |
| Khon Kaen | Northeast (Isan) | about 390 km |
| Ko Samui (Nathon) | Gulf islands | about 475 km |
| Chiang Mai | North | about 585 km |
| Krabi Town | Andaman coast | about 655 km |
| Chiang Rai | Far north | about 690 km |
| Phuket Town | Andaman coast | about 695 km |
As a rough guide, places within about 150 kilometers, such as Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin, are practical by road or rail, and Ayutthaya is close enough for a day trip. The north and the southern islands are far enough that most visitors fly. If you are going by train, check whether it leaves from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Chatuchak or from the older Hua Lamphong station, as Bangkok has both.
Nearby: the beaches and old capitals
The closest beach resorts to Bangkok are on the eastern Gulf coast. Pattaya is about 100 kilometers from the city center in a straight line; our guide to how far Pattaya is from Bangkok covers buses, trains and taxis. Hua Hin, on the western side of the Gulf, is a little further. Ayutthaya, the former royal capital, is the closest of the old capitals, about 66 kilometers north.

Further away: the north, the northeast and the islands
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are in the mountainous north, roughly 585 and 690 kilometers from Bangkok in a straight line. Khon Kaen, the main city of the northeast, is about 390 kilometers away; see how far Khon Kaen is from Bangkok. On the Andaman coast, Phuket and Krabi are both roughly 650 to 700 kilometers south, and our guide to how far Phuket is from Bangkok by plane covers the flight.
Bangkok's airports
Bangkok has two international airports, both run by Airports of Thailand:
- Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), about 28 kilometers east of the Old City. It is just outside the city limits, in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province.
- Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), about 21 kilometers north of the Old City, inside Bangkok.
Check which one your ticket uses before you set off. Our guide to getting from Bangkok airport to the city covers the transfer.
Seeing Bangkok itself
If Bangkok is your base, the big sights are close together in the Old City: the Grand Palace and its temple, Wat Phra Kaew, with Wat Pho a short walk south and Wat Arun across the river. Browse our Bangkok attractions to plan the days before you head out to the rest of Thailand.
