How much is a flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui? There is no single price. The fare changes with the date, how far ahead you book, the cabin and the ticket rules, so the only reliable figure is the one the airline quotes for your exact dates. What you can plan around is who flies the route, what pushes the price up or down, and what the cheaper alternatives involve.
This guide deliberately gives no sample fares: any number printed here would be out of date within days. Instead, it explains how to read the fare you are quoted and when the direct flight is worth paying for.
Which airlines fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui
Bangkok Airways is the main airline on the route. Its website lists the Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to Samui flight, and the airline built Samui Airport, which opened on April 25, 1989 on a former coconut plantation at Bo Phut in the north of the island. Bangkok Airways describes the flight from Bangkok as taking about 50 minutes. On July 1, 2025 the company transferred the airport's operating certificate to Bangkok Airport Management Company Limited, with approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand.
Thai Airways also sells tickets to Ko Samui (airport code USM) on its website, which is useful mainly for travelers connecting from its international network through Bangkok.
Flights to Samui leave from Suvarnabhumi Airport, not Don Mueang. Suvarnabhumi sits just outside the city in Samut Prakan province, so allow for the rail link or the drive when you plan a morning departure. What drives the price of a Bangkok to Samui ticket
Far fewer airlines fly into Samui than into mainland airports, so the route sees less competition, and direct Samui flights tend to cost more than flights of a similar length elsewhere in Thailand. Within that, these are the factors that move the fare you see:
- Travel dates. Thai public holidays, the Songkran festival in April and the cool, dry months from about November to February bring the heaviest demand. Midweek flights and rainy-season dates usually have more seats left.
- How far ahead you book. Airline fares are sold in booking classes. Once the cheaper classes on a flight sell out, only higher fares remain, so late bookings for peak dates cost the most.
- Cabin. Bangkok Airways sells Economy and Business class, and runs Blue Ribbon lounges for Business passengers at Samui. Business costs more but comes with lounge access and more flexible rules.
- Ticket rules. Cheaper fares are often non-refundable and charge a fee to change the date. A flexible fare costs more up front but can save money if your plans are likely to move. Read the fare conditions shown at booking, not just the headline number.
- One-way or return. Bangkok Airways notes in its own promotional fare terms that a return fare can sometimes be cheaper than a one-way on the same promotion, so price both.
- Taxes and surcharges. Check whether the displayed fare includes airport tax, fuel surcharge and any ticketing fee. The total at the payment step is the number to compare.
- Children and infants. Discounts vary by fare type; some promotional fares charge a child the full adult price.
Cheaper alternatives: Surat Thani or bus and boat
If the direct flight is more than your budget allows, two slower routes reach the island.
Fly to Surat Thani, then take the ferry
Surat Thani Airport is on the mainland and is served by more airlines. Nok Air, for example, flies between Bangkok (Don Mueang) and Surat Thani. From Surat Thani Airport, the ferry company Lomprayah sells a combined bus and catamaran or speedboat ticket that connects the airport with the pier and continues to Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The whole journey takes much of a day rather than an hour, so weigh the combined fare against the lost time.
Bus and boat from Bangkok
Lomprayah also sells a through ticket from its Bangkok office at Pinklao to Koh Samui (Pralarn Pier), with an air-conditioned bus to the coast and a high-speed catamaran across. It is usually the lowest-cost option and the slowest.
How to get the best fare
- Search Bangkok Airways directly for your dates, then compare the total with Thai Airways and with a Surat Thani itinerary.
- Book early for December to February, Songkran and long weekends.
- Stay flexible by a day or two; midweek departures often cost less.
- Choose the fare type that matches how certain your plans are.
- If you are connecting from an international flight, check whether a through ticket protects the connection before booking the domestic leg separately.
