How much is a taxi from Bangkok airport to the city? There is no fixed price: a public taxi from either airport charges the metered fare, plus a 50-baht airport surcharge paid to the driver, plus any expressway tolls, which the passenger pays. Luggage charges can apply on top, and Airports of Thailand (AOT) publishes the limits at Don Mueang. So the total depends on where you are going, the route and the traffic.
Meter rates are set by Thailand's Department of Land Transport, and we only quote them from a dated notice by that department, which we could not read at the time of writing. This guide sets out the parts of the fare the airports publish, where the taxi ranks are, and the alternatives if you want a price agreed before you set off.
What you pay on a public airport taxi
Both airport operators describe the same fare structure for public taxis:
- The meter. Fares are charged by meter at rates set by the Department of Land Transport. Check that the meter is switched on when you set off.
- A 50-baht airport surcharge. AOT says this is an additional charge for the driver, under a Ministry of Transport announcement. It is added to the metered fare, not included in it.
- Expressway tolls. Tolls on the expressway and other special tolls are paid by the passenger. If the driver uses the expressway, keep some small notes ready for the toll booths.
- Luggage. AOT's Suvarnabhumi page says baggage fees may apply under Ministry of Transport rules. The Don Mueang page lists the caps, which are in the FAQ below.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)
The public taxi counter and automatic queue-ticket machines are on Level 1 of the passenger terminal, between Gate 4 and Gate 7. Taxis run 24 hours a day. You take a queue ticket first, and waiting time depends on demand.
AOT lists two kinds of service. Short-distance taxis serve areas within about 20 kilometers of the airport, following a designated service map. Normal-distance taxis cover longer trips.
One detail matters for trips into Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi is in Samut Prakan province, not in the City of Bangkok. AOT quotes a Department of Land Transport notice allowing Bangkok-registered taxis hired outside Bangkok, including in Samut Prakan, to charge an agreed price as an alternative to the meter. If a driver proposes a fixed price, you can agree it before you leave or ask for the meter.
VIP and electric taxis
Suvarnabhumi also has premium taxi services. EV Society Taxi VIP operates from Level 1, Gates 4 and 7 (middle curb), and CABBY electric VIP taxis from Gate 3 (middle curb), both 24 hours a day. They charge a higher starting fare than public taxis plus the meter, and AOT lists an additional 100-baht service charge for CABBY.
Don Mueang Airport (DMK)
At Don Mueang, the taxi-meter counters are on the 1st floor of International Terminal 1 at Gate 8, and in the Domestic Terminal next to Gate 15, under the seven-story parking building. The fare rules are the same: meter, a 50-baht surcharge for the driver, and tolls paid by the passenger.
Don Mueang is inside the City of Bangkok, in the north of the city. EV Society VIP Taxi and CABB VIP Taxi also have counters at International Terminal 1, Gate 7, and AOT lists an additional 100 baht for the driver on those services. Price agreed in advance: Grab and AOT Limousine
If you would rather know the price before you get in, two options are listed by the airports:
- Grab. The app shows the fare when you book. At Suvarnabhumi, AOT sends Grab passengers to a designated pickup point on Level 1, Gate 4 (outer curb), open 24 hours. At Don Mueang, Grab's service counter is in Terminal 2, 1st floor, Gate 14. See how to use Grab in Bangkok.
- AOT Limousine at Suvarnabhumi has counters on Level 2 for domestic and international arrivals, with walk-in booking at the counter and vehicle classes from an eco sedan to an eight-seat van. Starting rates are in the FAQ.
AOT's SAWASDEE by AOT app can also book a Suvarnabhumi airport taxi in advance, from 35 minutes up to three months ahead; you tell the driver your destination and pay the fare directly at the end of the trip.
Tips for a smooth ride
- Have your hotel's address, ideally in Thai, or a map pin ready to show the driver. If you have not booked yet, start with our Bangkok hotels.

The passenger. Airports of Thailand says expressway tolls and special tolls are paid by passengers at both airports.
They can apply. At Don Mueang, AOT lists: up to 21 baht for a bag larger than 26 inches; up to 20 baht each from the third bag onward if bags are 26 inches or smaller; and up to 100 baht for sports equipment or a boxed or tied item of 50 inches or more.

AOT lists starting rates of 550 baht for an eco sedan, 650 baht for an SUV, 750 baht for a standard sedan, 850 baht for a standard van (up to 8 passengers), 1,000 baht for a premium sedan, 1,150 baht for a premium van and 1,300 baht for a luxury sedan. Final prices depend on the destination; booking is walk-in at the Level 2 counters.
