The best things to do in Ari, Bangkok, are low-key: working your way through the cafés and bakeries in the lanes off Phahon Yothin Road, eating out in a residential neighborhood rather than a tourist district, and using Ari's Skytrain station as a base for Chatuchak Weekend Market, two stops north. Ari has no major sights of its own, and that is its appeal. It suits a slow morning, a second or third visit to Bangkok, or travelers who want a quieter part of town that is still on the BTS.

Where is Ari?
Ari is a neighborhood in the Phaya Thai district, north of central Bangkok, built around Ari station (N5) on the BTS Sukhumvit Line. Its cafés and restaurants are spread along Phahon Yothin Road and the lanes (soi) that run off it, including Soi Phahon Yothin 5 and 7 and the Ari Samphan sois. Most of the neighborhood is housing and offices, so the streets are quieter than Siam or Sukhumvit, and the pleasure is in walking the lanes rather than ticking off landmarks.
Getting there
Take the BTS Sukhumvit Line to Ari. On the BTS map, Ari sits between Sanam Pao and Saphan Khwai: two stops north of Victory Monument, five stops north of Siam, where you change for the Silom Line, and two stops south of Mo Chit. Cafés and bakeries
Café-hopping is the main thing people come to Ari for. Opening hours change often in this part of town, so check each place's own page on the day; these are established spots with current listings.
Landhaus Bakery
Landhaus Bakery occupies a house at 18 Soi Phahon Yothin 5, about 450 meters from Ari station in a straight line, with seating inside and in a leafy yard, and a counter of breads and pastries. It runs its own website, landhaus-bakery-bangkok.com.
Lilou & Laliart
Lilou & Laliart is a coffee shop in a converted house on Soi Ari Samphan 10, about a kilometer from the station in a straight line. It posts updates on its Facebook page, Laliart Coffee. Walking between the two takes you through the residential sois that give Ari its character.
Eating out
Ari's restaurants serve the people who live and work here, which makes it a good place to eat away from the tourist circuit. Salt, a restaurant at 111/2 Soi Phahon Yothin 7, is a good example: an independent place on a residential lane, about 400 meters from Ari station in a straight line. Right by the station on Phahon Yothin Road, Market Place Ari is a shopping mall with a supermarket and restaurants, useful for supplies or a quick air-conditioned meal. Day trips from Ari by BTS
Ari's real advantage is its position on the Skytrain.
- Chatuchak Weekend Market: two stops north to Mo Chit brings you to the area of Chatuchak Weekend Market, which trades on Saturdays and Sundays, through the day and into the evening. Our guide to where Chatuchak Market is has the details. Bring cash; many vendors prefer it.

A half-day in Ari
A simple plan: arrive at Ari station mid-morning and walk the lanes off Phahon Yothin Road, stopping at a bakery for breakfast and a coffee shop a few sois away. Have lunch in the neighborhood, then take the BTS onward. On a Saturday or Sunday, ride two stops north for an afternoon at Chatuchak Weekend Market; on a weekday, ride south to Siam and National Stadium for the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, which is open Tuesday to Sunday. Either way you finish the day on the Skytrain, well placed for dinner in central Bangkok.

- Combine Ari with Chatuchak on a Saturday or Sunday for a full day in the north of the city.
- Ari's lanes are residential: keep voices down, and don't block driveways when you stop for photos.
