The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, known as BACC, is the city's public art center, at the Pathumwan intersection across from MBK Center and Siam Discovery, where the main exhibitions are free. It opened in 2008 after more than a decade of campaigning by Thai artists, and it is run by the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre Foundation with support from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

It suits anyone spending the day around Siam who wants an hour or two of contemporary Thai and international art without buying a ticket, and it makes an easy indoor break between the malls. Getting there could hardly be easier: the third-floor entrance connects straight to BTS National Stadium, and a Saen Saep canal boat pier at Hua Chang is about 300 meters away.

How the building works

The main galleries fill the seventh to ninth floors and show the exhibitions curated by BACC and its partners. On the way up, smaller shows hang along the curved walls of the central atrium, and the second floor holds the People's Gallery. The fifth floor has the auditorium, the information counter, the lockers and the bacc shop, while the lower floors are lined with artHUB shops, cafés and learning centers.

Library, talks and performances

The Art Library on the L floor lends a quiet, free space of contemporary art books, magazines and Thai exhibition catalogues, with reading seats, a co-working area and a Kid's Corner for families. BACC also runs education programs, performance projects, concerts and plays; the exhibitions are free, but performances and special events can carry their own charges.

Before you go

Leave backpacks, umbrellas and larger bags in the fifth-floor lockers before entering the main galleries. Photography is allowed unless a work is signed otherwise, but not flash, tripods or selfie sticks, and food and drink stay outside the galleries. Plan around the closing days: BACC shuts on Mondays and over the New Year and Songkran holidays.

Yes, on the B1 and B2 floors, entered only from Phaya Thai Road. Exhibition visitors can get a 2-hour free parking stamp at the fifth-floor information counter. Without it, the first 15 minutes are free, then THB 20 an hour for hours 1 to 2, THB 30 an hour for hours 3 to 4 and THB 40 an hour after that.

No. Backpacks of any size, umbrellas and bags larger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm must go into the lockers on the fifth floor before you enter the main galleries on floors 7 to 9.

Yes, for non-commercial use, unless a work is marked otherwise. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed, and video recording in the main galleries needs permission.

Yes. Wheelchairs are available from the security office on the first floor or the information counter on the fifth floor, there are accessible toilets on every floor, and elevators reach all floors, including a lift by the BTS entrance on the third floor.
