Crazy Things to Do in Bangkok: Glass Floors, Muay Thai and Other Thrills

Looking for crazy things to do in Bangkok, the kind that get your pulse up? The city's best thrills are its heights and its fights: standing on a glass floor 310 meters above Silom at the Mahanakhon SkyWalk, watching live Muay Thai at Rajadamnern Stadium, and riding the roller coasters at Siam Amazing Park. Add a drive among free-roaming lions and tigers at Safari World, and a dinner on an open-air terrace 64 floors up, and you have a full adrenaline itinerary without leaving the city.

Here is what each one involves, who it suits, and the practical details worth knowing before you go.

Step onto the glass at the Mahanakhon SkyWalk

The Mahanakhon SkyWalk sits on top of King Power Mahanakhon, the 314-meter tower in Silom with the pixelated facade that appears to unravel as it climbs. Its operator bills it as Thailand's highest observation deck. The indoor gallery on the 74th floor is the gentle part; the thrill is the open rooftop on the 78th, where a glass tray floor hangs 310 meters above the street. You put on disposable shoe covers before stepping out, and phones and loose items stay off the glass, so photos are taken from the official photo point.

For more, the tower's Mahanakhon Bangkok I-Tilt on the 75th floor, at 296 meters, tilts riders 65 degrees out over the edge of the building. It needs a SkyWalk ticket and has height, weight and health restrictions, listed in the FAQ below.

Who it suits: anyone who wants the whole city at once, and anyone who wants to test their nerve. Sunset and after dark are the popular slots; the deck stays open until midnight. The BTS to Chong Nonsi, exit 3, brings you to the foot of the tower.

Watch Muay Thai at Rajadamnern Stadium

For live action, Rajadamnern Stadium is the place to start. It opened in 1945 on Ratchadamnoen Nok Road, calls itself the world's first Muay Thai stadium, and introduced the sport's first circular ring, ranking system and championship belt. Fights run seven nights a week under its dome, with a live Muay Thai orchestra, the pre-fight wai khru ritual and about 3,500 seats around the ring.

Which night to choose

• Saturday: the Rajadamnern World Series, with three-round bouts, a five-round main event, international fighters and open scoring shown after every round. It is the easiest card for newcomers to follow.
• Monday, Tuesday and Friday: Rajadamnern Knockout, three-round bouts built around fast finishes.
• Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday: traditional five-round nights, closer to how Thai fans have watched for decades.

Ringside puts you beside the fighters and the orchestra, while the stadium recommends Club Class for first-timers and families for its full view of the ring. The dome also doubles as a projection screen for an immersive show on the history of Muay Thai, which is part of the evening. The stadium is at the edge of the old city, away from the rail lines, so plan on a taxi or a canal boat for the last stretch.

Ride the coasters at Siam Amazing Park

Siam Amazing Park, in Khan Na Yao in eastern Bangkok, is an amusement park with its own water park. Its thrill rides are grouped in a zone it calls Xtreme World, which includes the Vortex and Boomerang roller coasters, the Giant Drop tower and a ride called Ranger. Most Xtreme World rides require riders to be at least 131 cm tall, and Ranger at least 141 cm, so check heights before you promise the children a turn. The park also has a separate Water World zone with water slides.

Who it suits: families with older children and groups who want a full day of rides. Tickets and current promotions are sold on the park's own website.

Drive among lions and tigers at Safari World

Safari World, on Bangkok's northeastern edge in Khlong Sam Wa, is a wilder day out in the literal sense. Its Safari Park is a drive-through route of almost 5 km where giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers and bears live in open enclosures; you go round in your own car or on one of the park's coaches. Next door, the Marine Park runs a program of animal shows plus a Spy War action show and a Western cowboy stunt show. The operator publishes no public transport directions, so treat it as a day out by car or taxi.

Dine 64 floors up at Sirocco

If your idea of a thrill is altitude with a proper dinner attached, Sirocco sits on an open-air terrace on the 64th floor of State Tower, beneath lebua's golden dome, with the skyline and the Chao Phraya below. Tables are outside, so it comes into its own at dusk. A reservation and deposit are required, and there is a smart-casual dress code. Plan an adrenaline day

These fit together well. Spend the day at Siam Amazing Park or Safari World, both on the outskirts, then come back into the center for an evening fight at Rajadamnern, where the gates open in the early evening. On another day, time the SkyWalk for sunset and walk to Silom for dinner. Rajadamnern, under its dome, and the SkyWalk's indoor 74th-floor gallery also work as bad-weather plans.
