January is one of the best months for things to do in Bangkok: it falls in the cool, dry season, so temple visits, markets, parks and river trips are more comfortable than at any other time of year. In January 2027 you can also catch the Bangkok Art Biennale, which runs across temples and museums until February 28, 2027, and National Children's Day on Saturday, January 9. Chinese New Year falls in February in 2027, not January.

Bangkok weather in January
The Thai Meteorological Department divides the year into three seasons. The northeast monsoon season, from mid-October to mid-February, is the mildest period, and January sits in the middle of it. The hot season follows from mid-February, and the rains return from mid-May.
What that looks like in practice: in January 2026, the department's monthly summary recorded an average temperature of 27.3°C (about 81°F) at its Bangkok Metropolis station, close to normal, and just 4.2 mm of rain for the whole month, well below the usual total. Days are still warm, so the cool season is relative, but mornings and evenings are the most pleasant of the year and rain rarely interrupts plans.
Pack light clothing, plus something that covers shoulders and knees for temples, and a light layer for air-conditioned malls and trains.
January events in Bangkok
Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 (to February 28, 2027)
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is promoting the fifth Bangkok Art Biennale, running from October 29, 2026 to February 28, 2027 under the theme Angels and Mara. Its venues include Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Museum Siam, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and the National Museum Bangkok, as well as One Bangkok, centralwOrld and Siam Paragon. That makes January a good month to combine the city's major temples with contemporary art. Check the Biennale's official channels for artists and venue details.
National Children's Day (Saturday, January 9, 2027)
Thailand celebrates National Children's Day on the second Saturday of January, which in 2027 is January 9. Government agencies in particular run activities for children, so expect busy family crowds at many public attractions that weekend.
New Year's Day
January 1 is a public holiday. Plan for closures and heavier crowds at popular sights around the holiday, and check opening hours for anywhere you want to visit.
Music and festivals
In January 2026, TAT's event calendar listed Bangkok Music City, a free-entry music festival with Thai and international artists, at Creative Charoen Krung on January 24 and 25. Dates for 2027 had not been announced when we checked; look for TAT's January 2027 event calendar (the January 2026 edition was published on December 26, 2025).
Chinese New Year: February in 2027
Chinese New Year often lands in late January or February. In 2027 Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday, February 6, so the big celebrations in Chinatown (Yaowarat) fall after January. If your trip runs into early February, plan an evening in Chinatown and a visit to Wat Traimit (the Golden Buddha) at the neighborhood's edge.
Best outdoor things to do in Bangkok in January
The cool, dry weather favors everything that is hard work in April.
Temples and the old city
January is the most comfortable month for the Grand Palace and the temples of Rattanakosin, where most of the visit is outdoors on stone courtyards. The Grand Palace sells tickets from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., so an early start still pays off. Add Wat Pho next door and a ferry across the river to Wat Arun, and you have a full day with the Biennale installations along the way.
Parks
Lumphini Park is at its best on January mornings, with runners on the lake loop and paddle boats for hire. From there, the elevated Green Bridge leads to Benjakitti Forest Park, where a skywalk runs above the wetland planting.
Markets
Chatuchak Weekend Market, open on Saturdays and Sundays, is a large, mostly open-air market, and January's cooler weather makes an afternoon in its lanes easier going. Combine it with coffee in Ari on the way back on the BTS.
The river
Clear, dry evenings suit the Chao Phraya. The Meridian Cruise sails from ICONSIAM with a sunset cruise and a later dinner cruise past Wat Arun and the Grand Palace, and the public river boats are another way to see the same banks by day.
