You can buy dried longan in Bangkok in three kinds of place: supermarkets, which sell small sealed packs; Or Tor Kor Market, the big fresh market by MRT Kamphaeng Phet; and the dried-goods lanes of Yaowarat, Bangkok's Chinatown. Supermarkets are the easiest option if you want a labeled pack to take home, while the markets suit anyone buying in quantity or wanting to compare several kinds side by side.

What to ask for
Longan is lamyai in Thai. Dried longan flesh is labeled เนื้อลำไยอบแห้ง (nuea lamyai op haeng), and that phrase on a pack tells you it is the peeled, dried fruit rather than longan in syrup, longan honey or a longan drink, all of which can share the same shelves. The best-known packs hold golden, amber-colored dried flesh; Tops, for example, sells Goody's golden dried longan in 65-gram packs.
Much of Thailand's longan comes from the north. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Lamphun, south of Chiang Mai, as a major producer, with the fresh fruit in season in July and August, when the province holds its annual longan festival. Dried longan is sold year-round, but read the label: supermarkets also stock longan from other countries, so the origin printed on the pack is the only reliable guide.
Supermarkets: the easy option
For a sealed, labeled pack, a supermarket is the simplest stop. Tops lists dried longan in its dried fruit and snacks range, alongside canned longan in syrup and several longan honeys. The gourmet supermarkets in the big central malls, such as Gourmet Market on the ground floor of Siam Paragon, are convenient if you are already shopping around Siam, though stock of any one item varies by branch and season, so check the dried fruit and snack aisle rather than expecting a particular brand.

Supermarket packs have one real advantage for travelers: they are sealed and carry an ingredients list and origin, which makes customs declarations at home straightforward.
Or Tor Kor Market: the biggest choice
Or Tor Kor Market, at 101 Kamphaeng Phet Road in Chatuchak, is a large covered fresh market known for its produce. Alongside its fruit and vegetable halls, stalls sell dried fruit and snacks in bags and boxes, which makes it a good place to compare dried longan from several sellers. It is about 100 meters from MRT Kamphaeng Phet station and about 400 meters from Chatuchak Weekend Market, so on a Saturday or Sunday the two combine easily.
Market stalls usually sell by weight or in their own packs. Ask the seller to seal a bag if you plan to fly with it, and carry cash.
Yaowarat: Chinatown's dried-goods lanes
Dried longan is a common ingredient in Chinese-style sweet soups and herbal drinks, and the dried-goods shops and market lanes of Yaowarat are the place to look for it. Yaowarat Old Market, off Yaowarat Road, is lined with stalls selling dried seafood, dried fruit, nuts and Chinese herbs. Prices and quality vary from stall to stall, so look at a few before you buy, and check that the fruit is dry and loose rather than stuck together.

Chinatown makes a good half-day around the shopping. Wat Traimit, the Temple of the Golden Buddha, stands at the Hua Lamphong end of the district, and Restaurant POTONG serves Thai-Chinese cooking in Chinatown. The Tourism Authority of Thailand suggests visiting Yaowarat in the evening, when its street food is at its liveliest.
Taking dried longan home
- Buy sealed packs if you can, and keep the label.
- Dried fruit is usually simple to carry, but import rules differ by country, so check your home customs rules before buying in bulk.
- Once opened, store it somewhere cool and dry.
