Where to buy cheap electronics in Bangkok? Start at MBK Center, beside BTS National Stadium, whose Mobile & IT Zone on the 4th floor gathers more than 250 phone, computer, camera and repair shops in one place. The second stop is Fortune Town at MRT Phra Ram 9, a mall built around IT and gadgets. Pantip Plaza on Phetchaburi Road is the famous old name, but its current line-up is harder to confirm, so check before making a special trip.
In Bangkok, a good price usually comes from comparing the same model across several shops under one roof rather than from a single bargain counter. The sections below cover each mall, then the two things that decide whether a deal is really a deal: the warranty and the tourist VAT refund.
MBK Center: the Mobile & IT Zone
MBK Center is at 444 Phayathai Road in Pathum Wan, and BTS National Stadium station has a connecting walkway into the building, which makes it the easiest electronics stop for most visitors. The mall has reorganized itself into themed zones, and its technology floor is the Mobile & IT Zone on the 4th floor, which MBK describes as more than 250 stores.
The mall names these among its tenants:
- Phones: Studio 7 for Apple products, plus Samsung and VIVO for Android.
- Laptops, tablets and PC parts: BaNANA.
- Cameras and audio: Big Camera and Fotofile for photography gear, and Sound Proof Brothers for headphones and hi-fi.
- Accessories: CASE CLUB for cases, Lemon Telecom for cables and power banks.
- Repairs: iCare at Studio 7, which MBK lists as an authorized Apple repair center, alongside independent repair shops for Android phones.
- SIM cards: TRUE Shop and AIS Shop, also on the 4th floor, for tourist SIMs and top-ups.
MBK also runs a tourist privileges counter on the G floor (Zone A) and a luggage storage and delivery desk on the 6th floor, useful if you shop on your last day before an airport transfer. Across the road, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre connects to the same BTS station, and Jim Thompson House is about a three-minute walk from exit 1 of the same station, so an MBK visit fits easily into a Siam-area day.
Fortune Town: an IT mall at Rama 9
Fortune Town, at 7 Ratchadaphisek Road in Din Daeng, calls itself an IT lifestyle mall and is run by C.P. Land. Its own shop directory is organized almost entirely around technology: PCs and laptops, smartphones and gadgets, cameras, sound and music, accessories, brand service centers, mobile-operator shops, and repair and upgrade specialists, across the G to 4th floors. The mall says it is reached from MRT Phra Ram 9, exit 1.
Fortune Town suits a focused shopping trip: it is further from the main hotel districts than MBK, but it is more concentrated on computers and components, and it is a direct ride on the MRT Blue Line from Sukhumvit.
Pantip Plaza: check before you go
Pantip Plaza, on Phetchaburi Road in the Pratunam area, was for decades Bangkok's best-known computer mall. We could not confirm its current tenants: its official website did not load for us, and Google Maps now lists the building at 604/3 Phetchaburi Road under a different mall name. If it is on your route, it may be worth a look, but for a planned electronics trip MBK and Fortune Town are the safer bets.
Warranty: ask before you pay
A lower price is only a saving if the warranty works where you live. Before paying, ask the shop three questions:
- Is this an official Thai-market product? Brand shops and authorized resellers should be able to confirm the manufacturer's local warranty in writing.
- Is the warranty international or Thailand-only? Some manufacturers honor warranties only in the country of sale. Check the brand's own warranty page for your model if you are unsure.
- What proof do I need? Keep the full tax invoice or receipt, with the model and serial number, and the original box.
Also check that chargers and plugs suit your home country, test the device in the shop, and confirm the box seal and serial number match the invoice.
Getting the VAT back as a tourist
Thailand charges 7% VAT, and visitors can reclaim it on goods they take home under the Revenue Department's VAT Refund for Tourists scheme. The main rules, from the Revenue Department:
- You must not be a Thai national or a permanent resident of Thailand, and you must be leaving from an international airport.
- Buy from stores that display the VAT Refund for Tourists sign, and spend at least 2,000 baht (VAT included) in each store on the same day. Ask the shop for the refund form, called the P.P.10, together with the original tax invoices.
- Only goods count, not services, and they must leave Thailand with you within 60 days of purchase.
- At the airport, show the goods, the P.P.10 and the invoices to Customs before you check in, and get the form stamped.
- Phones, laptops, computers and other luxury items worth 10,000 baht or more each must be carried in your hand luggage and shown again at the VAT Refund for Tourists office after immigration.
