How many terminals are there at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport? One. Airports of Thailand (AOT), which runs the airport, describes a single, very large passenger terminal that handles both international and domestic flights, with seven concourses. Since 2023 it has been joined by the Midfield Satellite 1, or SAT-1, a separate gate building reached by an underground train. So there is no Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to choose between: every passenger starts and ends in the main terminal.
That matters when you plan the day. You will not need to work out which terminal your airline uses, but you may need extra minutes if your gate is out at SAT-1.
The main passenger terminal
AOT's own figures give a sense of the scale. The terminal covers about 563,000 square meters, and the airfield has 51 contact gates, where aircraft park against the building, plus 69 remote stands. The terminal building has seven storeys, and the departure hall is on the 4th floor. The airport runs 24 hours a day and opened for commercial flights on September 28, 2006.
Because international and domestic flights share the same building, a connection from an international arrival to a domestic flight on to Chiang Mai or Phuket does not involve a transfer between terminals. You still pass immigration and, if your bags were not checked through, collect and re-check them.
SAT-1, the midfield satellite
SAT-1 is a gate building out on the airfield, linked to the main terminal underground. According to AOT it has 28 contact gates: eight are sized for the largest aircraft, such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8, and 20 for wide-bodies such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340. It has four floors above ground and two below:
- 4th floor: passenger lounges and airline lounges.
- 3rd floor: the departure level, with waiting areas at the gates and shops along the walkways.
- 2nd floor: the arrival level and the area for connecting flights.
- B2: the station for the automated people mover.
The two buildings are joined by a tunnel about one kilometer long. Driverless, rubber-tired trains shuttle passengers through it, and AOT puts the trip at about three minutes including the wait at the station, with room for up to 210 people per train. Checked bags travel from the main terminal to SAT-1 through the same tunnel on their own tracks, so check-in and bag drop stay in the main terminal whatever your gate.
SAT-1 was built in the airport's second development phase to lift capacity from 45 million to 60 million passengers a year. It has smart toilets, benches with USB ports, a baby care room, meditation rooms and Muslim prayer rooms, and each floor has its own Thai design theme: mythical Himmapan creatures on the 3rd floor and a garden installation on the 2nd.
How to tell which building your flight uses
Your boarding pass and the departure screens show the gate. If it is in SAT-1, build the train ride into your timing rather than browsing the shops until boarding is called. On arrival at a SAT-1 gate, the train brings you back to the main terminal.
Getting to and from the terminal
Suvarnabhumi is not in the City of Bangkok. AOT gives its address as Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province, about 31 kilometers east of Bangkok. Most city buses and long-distance coaches leave from the airport's Public Transportation Center rather than from the terminal itself, and a free airport shuttle links the two. AOT lists an Express shuttle line between the Public Transportation Center and Exit 5 on the 2nd and 4th floors of the passenger terminal. How early to arrive
AOT's general advice is to allow at least two hours before your flight. In late September 2026, with heavy rain and local flooding around the city, the Tourism Authority of Thailand reported that the airport was asking passengers to allow at least three hours for international flights and two hours for domestic ones, and to avoid the flooded Lat Krabang approach.
