To use Grab in Bangkok, install the Grab app, verify your phone number, set your pickup point and destination, choose a ride type and confirm. Car bookings show an upfront price before you book, and you can pay in cash, by credit or debit card, or with GrabPay. The rest of this guide covers which ride type to choose, how to make pickups work on Bangkok's busy roads, airport trips, and the times when the Skytrain or a river boat will get you there sooner.
Setting up the app
Grab runs one app across Southeast Asia, with services in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar and Cambodia as well as Thailand. If you already use it at home, there is nothing new to install. New users register with a phone number, and Grab sends an activation code to that number to confirm it, so set up the app while your home SIM or a working Thai SIM is in the phone.
Add a card before you arrive if you would rather not handle cash. Cash still works for most instant rides, but advance bookings are cashless only.
Booking a ride, step by step
- Open the app and tap Transport. Your pickup point fills in from GPS.
- Check the pickup pin. In Bangkok a hotel entrance, a mall door and a side soi can be a few minutes apart by car, so tap the address and enter the exact spot if the pin is vague.
- Enter your destination in the drop-off bar and check it is the right branch or entrance; many malls and hotels have several.
- Choose a ride type, check the price and payment method, and book.
- Follow the car on the map. Use the in-app chat to tell the driver where you are standing. Drivers see your name, profile photo and booking details, not your phone number.
- Check that the car and plate match the app before you get in, then rate the trip at the end.
Which ride type to choose
Grab's Thailand menu is longer than most visitors need. These are the options that matter in Bangkok:

Grab also lists GrabPet, with seat covers for travelling with an animal, and GrabAssist, whose drivers are trained to help passengers board and to stow assistive devices. Some options run only in certain areas, so what you see in the app depends on where you are.
Paying, surge and tolls
The upfront fare on car services excludes tolls and surcharges, so an expressway ride will cost more than the figure on screen. Grab says upfront fares are subject to surge pricing when demand is high, and if you end a trip early you still pay the full fare. GrabTaxi works differently: the driver starts the meter once you are in the car, and you pay a booking fee on top.
Airport rides
Don Mueang International Airport, inside the city in the Don Mueang district, lists Grab among its official arrival transport options alongside metered taxis, limousines, shuttle buses and the Red Line train. Suvarnabhumi Airport sits just outside the city limits in Samut Prakan, and Grab also advertises airport transfers there.
For a departure, use Advance Booking: tap the calendar icon on the booking screen. You can book between 90 days and 75 minutes ahead, cancel free up to an hour before pickup, and the driver waits up to 15 minutes past the scheduled time. It is the safer choice for an early-morning flight, when a last-minute car can be scarce.
When the train or the river is faster
Grab does not make Bangkok's traffic disappear. At rush hour the BTS Skytrain and MRT are often quicker than any car, and several riverside hotels run their own boats. Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok and Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River both shuttle guests to ICONSIAM by boat, and the Four Seasons boat also runs to Sathorn Pier for BTS Saphan Taksin. Around Siam, Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok runs a free golf cart to BTS Siam.
A good rule: use the Skytrain or MRT for the long, straight runs along Sukhumvit, Silom and Siam, and use Grab to finish the trip, for late nights, or when you have luggage. For the Old City, the Chao Phraya Express Boat from Sathorn Pier to Tha Chang Pier is a practical approach to the Grand Palace, and on weekends the MRT to Kamphaeng Phet station for Chatuchak Weekend Market saves sitting in market traffic. Safety features worth knowing
- Emergency button: during a ride you can alert the authorities or your emergency contacts from the app.
- Share my ride: sends your live location to a friend or family member.
- Number masking: neither you nor the driver sees the other's personal number.
- Driver checks: Grab says its drivers go through a 25-point background check, training and a vehicle inspection.
Grab is also trialling AudioProtect, which records audio during rides as an extra layer of protection.
