The top things to buy in Bangkok for Indian tourists are Thai silk, gold and silver jewelry from the city's traditional jewelry streets, clothing from fashion malls such as Platinum Fashion Mall, and gifts and handicrafts from Chatuchak Weekend Market. Before you shop, know the two rules that decide what a haul really costs: India's Baggage Rules, 2026, which since February 2, 2026 let an adult Indian resident flying home bring in goods worth up to ₹75,000 duty-free, and Thailand's VAT refund, which returns part of the 7% VAT on eligible goods you take out of the country.
India is one of Thailand's biggest markets: the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) counted a record 1,961,069 Indian visitors in 2019 and said Indian arrivals passed two million in 2024. This guide sticks to what we can verify from official sources.

What to buy in Bangkok
Thai silk
Thai silk is the classic purchase, and it works well for sarees, dupattas, kurtas and gifts. The Jim Thompson House Museum near BTS National Stadium tells the story of James H.W. Thompson, known as the Thai Silk King, who exported Thai silk internationally, with guided tours of his teak houses beside the Ban Krua weaving village. The Jim Thompson brand still sells Thai silk through its own shops and website.
Gold and silver jewelry
The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), the state gem institute, names three Bangkok jewelry districts in its Buy With Confidence program: Yaowarat Road in Chinatown for gold, Charoen Krung Road for silver, and Silom and Surawong roads for diamonds and fine jewelry. GIT's directions for Yaowarat are the MRT to Hua Lamphong and a short ride on; for Charoen Krung, BTS Saphan Taksin.
Buy from established shops, ask for a detailed receipt, and for valuable gems ask for a GIT laboratory report. TAT's advice is blunt: ignore strangers, taxi drivers or tuk-tuk drivers who steer you to a "special sale", which it says is almost always a scam. Our guide on where to buy pearls in Bangkok covers GIT testing and the scam in more detail. Read the customs section below before buying gold: jewelry counts toward your duty-free allowance on a short trip.

Clothing and fashion
For clothing in quantity, Platinum Fashion Mall on Phetchaburi Road in Ratchathewi is packed with small fashion shops. It opens from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is useful for family gifts and wedding-season shopping, but remember that everything you carry home counts against the same ₹75,000 allowance.
Gifts, handicrafts and home decor
Chatuchak Weekend Market in north Bangkok is the place for small gifts, handicrafts, ceramics and home decor at market prices. TAT counts it among Asia's largest open-air markets. It trades only on weekends, so plan your Saturday or Sunday around it, carry cash in baht and bargain politely. For malls, department stores and more markets, see our Bangkok shopping guide.

India's duty-free allowance under the Baggage Rules, 2026
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) replaced the Baggage Rules, 2016 with the Baggage Rules, 2026, in force from February 2, 2026. If you have seen ₹50,000 quoted elsewhere, that figure is out of date. For passengers arriving in India by air, the general free allowance is:
| Passenger | Duty-free allowance |
|---|---|
| Indian resident | ₹75,000 |
| Tourist of Indian origin (including OCI cardholders) | ₹75,000 |
| Foreigner with a valid visa other than a tourist visa | ₹75,000 |
| Tourist of foreign origin | ₹25,000 |
The key details for a Bangkok shopping trip:
- Per person, no pooling. Each passenger has his or her own allowance, and families cannot combine allowances to clear one expensive item. Infants, children up to two, do not get the general allowance.
- Used personal effects and travel souvenirs are allowed free on top of the allowance, and each passenger aged 18 or over may bring one new laptop duty-free.
- Not covered by the allowance: alcohol over 2 litres, more than 100 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 125 grams of tobacco, gold or silver in any form other than ornaments, televisions, and firearms.
- Jewelry. The separate jewelry allowance, 40 grams for a female passenger and 20 grams for others, applies only to residents or tourists of Indian origin who have lived abroad for more than a year. On a holiday to Bangkok, jewelry you buy counts within the general ₹75,000 allowance.
- Declare what is over the limit. Passengers carrying dutiable or prohibited goods must declare them on Form CBD-I through the ATITHI app or ICEGATE, up to three days before arrival, and use the Red Channel. Non-declaration can lead to confiscation, fines or prosecution.
- Currency. Declare foreign currency notes above US$5,000, or all foreign exchange above US$10,000. Residents may take up to ₹25,000 in Indian currency out of India.
Claiming the Thai VAT refund
Thailand's VAT rate is 7%, and visitors can claim part of it back on goods they take home. According to Thailand's Revenue Department, you qualify if you are not a Thai national or permanent resident, are leaving by air from an international airport, and bought the goods at shops displaying the VAT Refund for Tourists sign.
- Spend at least 2,000 baht, VAT included, at a participating store in a single day, and ask for the VAT refund form (P.P.10) and the original tax invoices at the time of purchase.
- Take the goods out within 60 days of purchase, counting the purchase date as day one. Only goods qualify, not services, and loose gemstones without a setting are excluded.
- Before check-in at the airport, show the goods, forms and invoices to Customs to get the P.P.10 stamped and signed.
- Keep valuable items in your hand luggage. Jewelry, gold, watches, glasses and pens worth more than 10,000 baht must be shown again at the VAT Refund for Tourists office after immigration, where you collect the refund.
Leave extra time at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang for these steps, especially on a busy evening departure. Our guide to getting between Bangkok's airport and the city covers the transport options.
