Where can you buy an iPad in Bangkok? The most straightforward places are Apple's own two stores in the city: Apple Central World, at the centralwOrld mall on Ratchadamri Road in Pathum Wan, and Apple Iconsiam, at the ICONSIAM mall on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River. Apple's Thai online store is the third official option, with the choice of collecting your order in one of those stores.
Buying from Apple means a genuine, new device with an Apple receipt, which matters for warranty service and for a tourist VAT refund. Here is how the two stores compare, how to reach them, and what visitors should check before paying.
Apple Central World (Pathum Wan)
Apple Central World stands in front of centralwOrld, the large shopping complex at the Ratchaprasong intersection, in the middle of the Siam and Ratchaprasong shopping district. Its address, as Apple lists it, is 4, 4/1-4/2, 4/4 Ratchadamri Road, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330.
- Getting there: the nearest Skytrain stations are BTS Chit Lom and BTS Siam. This is the more convenient store if you are staying around Siam, Ratchaprasong or Sukhumvit.

Apple Iconsiam (Khlong San)
Apple Iconsiam is at ICONSIAM, 299 Charoen Nakhon Road, Khlong Ton Sai, Khlong San, on the west bank of the river. Apple Iconsiam was Thailand's first Apple Store; the Central World store was the second.
- Getting there: ICONSIAM is next to Charoen Nakhon station on the BTS Gold Line, a short people-mover line that connects with the Silom Line at Krung Thon Buri. It also has its own river piers, and the mall runs a ferry from Sathorn Pier, near BTS Saphan Taksin.
- Good for: visitors staying along the river. You can combine the trip with a meal or a river boat ride.
Buying online and collecting in store
Apple's Thai online store sells the full iPad range and lets you order and then collect in one of the two Bangkok stores, which is useful if you want to be sure a particular model, color or storage size is in stock before you travel across the city. The stores also run the Genius Bar for setup and repairs, and Apple offers trade-in and 0% installment plans with Thai banks, though the installment plans run through Thai banks' credit cards, so they are of little use to most visitors.
What visitors should check before buying
Price
Apple sets its Thai prices in baht and they include 7% VAT. Compare the price on Apple's Thai website with the price at home before assuming Bangkok is cheaper, and remember that a tourist VAT refund, if you qualify, reduces the difference further.
Tourist VAT refund
Thailand's Revenue Department runs a VAT Refund for Tourists scheme. The main conditions are:
- You are not a Thai national or permanent resident, and you are leaving Thailand from an international airport.
- You buy from a store displaying the VAT Refund for Tourists sign, and spend at least 2,000 baht, including VAT, at that store on the same day. Ask the store for the refund form, P.P.10, with your tax invoice.
- You take the goods out of Thailand within 60 days of purchase.
- Before check-in, you show the goods, forms and original invoices to Customs at the airport.
Computers, laptops and smartphones worth 10,000 baht or more count as luxury goods under the rules: carry them in your hand luggage, because you must show them again at the VAT Refund for Tourists Office after immigration. Warranty and model
Keep your receipt. Check the model and its Wi-Fi or cellular bands if you plan to use it on a mobile network at home, and check Apple's warranty terms for your country before you buy. Buying from Apple gives you a new device with a clear purchase record.
