The biggest mall in Bangkok is usually said to be CentralWorld, which calls itself Bangkok's largest shopping complex, with ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya as the other contender. Size rankings that circulate online put the two close together and measure them in different ways, so there is no single official answer. For a visitor, the more useful question is which of the big malls suits the day: CentralWorld for a central, rail-connected shopping stop, ICONSIAM for a river outing by boat.
CentralWorld: the city-center contender
CentralWorld stands at 999/9 Rama I Road in Pathum Wan, at the Ratchaprasong end of the city's main shopping district, and is run by Central Pattana, the developer behind the Central shopping centers across Thailand. Its position is its strength: it sits among Siam Paragon, Gaysorn Village and a run of hotels, so a CentralWorld visit easily becomes a half-day of shopping without another taxi ride.

ICONSIAM: the riverside rival
ICONSIAM, developed by Siam Piwat, the company behind Siam Paragon, stands at 299 Charoen Nakhon Road in Khlong San, on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya across the river from the Charoen Krung hotels. Much of the appeal is arriving by water, which turns a shopping trip into a short river outing. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
There are three practical ways in:
- By boat: take the BTS to Saphan Taksin, leave by Exit 2 for Sathorn Pier, and cross by boat. Si Phraya Pier is another boat stop.
- By Skytrain: change to the Gold Line, which stops at Charoennakorn station for the mall.
- By hotel boat: several riverside hotels run their own shuttles. Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok sends a boat every 30 minutes, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok every 60 minutes, and Capella Bangkok and Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok also run boats there for their guests.
Siam Paragon and the Siam cluster
Siam Paragon, also a Siam Piwat mall, is smaller than the two leaders but is the easiest of the three to reach: it stands at BTS Siam, the Skytrain interchange, next to its sister malls Siam Center and Siam Discovery. It houses SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World, which the mall describes as one of Southeast Asia's largest aquariums at 10,000 square meters. Siam Kempinski is linked to Siam Paragon by a covered walkway on the second floor.
Siam Piwat's malls share a tourist card that covers Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Siam Discovery, ICONSIAM, Siam Premium Outlets and ICS. Siam Paragon says it unlocks discounts at participating brands and department stores and helps with VAT refunds, so it is worth looking into if you plan to shop across more than one of them.
MBK Center: the practical one
MBK Center, on Phaya Thai Road at the Pathumwan intersection, is the mall people use for errands. It is organized into zones, including a large mobile and IT zone, a supermarket, and a service zone with banking, postal services, luggage storage and delivery. It opens daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and faces the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, where the main exhibitions are free, so the two pair well on a rainy afternoon.
The newest large malls
Two newer developments have joined the list. One Bangkok, the large mixed-use district on Witthayu (Wireless) Road in the Lumphini area of Pathum Wan, and Central Park at Dusit Central Park on Rama IV Road in Bang Rak both include big retail podiums, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand now names them alongside ICONSIAM and Siam Paragon as places where luxury brands and Thai designer labels share floors.
Big malls that are not in Bangkok
Several malls that appear in lists of the largest in "Bangkok" are outside the city itself. Central WestGate is in Bang Yai, Nonthaburi; Future Park Rangsit is in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani; and Mega Bangna is in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. They are within the wider metropolitan area and make sense if you are staying nearby, but all three are well outside the central hotel districts, so they are rarely worth a special trip on a short stay.
Which big mall should you visit?
- Short on time, staying central: CentralWorld and Siam Paragon, close together in the Siam and Ratchaprasong district.
- Want a river outing: ICONSIAM by boat, combined with a riverside hotel or a trip along the Chao Phraya.
- Need a SIM card, phone repair or luggage storage: MBK Center.
- Want markets rather than malls: Chatuchak Weekend Market on a Saturday or Sunday.
