ICONSIAM stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya in Khlong San, a riverside mall built to put Thai culture beside international shopping. It was developed by a partnership of three Thai companies, and its centerpiece for visitors is SookSiam, which gathers regional food, handicrafts and folk arts from all 77 provinces of Thailand under one roof, so a single stop covers souvenirs, lunch and a look at the country's four regions.

It suits a half day planned around the river rather than the Skytrain: shop, eat, walk the riverside park and stay for the evening fountain show. Many visitors staying on the east bank arrive by boat, and several riverfront hotels run their own boats here for guests, while the BTS Gold Line serves the mall at Charoennakorn Station.

SookSiam and Thai craft

SookSiam is the place to start for anyone short on time: regional dishes that are hard to find in central Bangkok sit alongside handicrafts and traditional folk arts, arranged to reflect Thailand's four regions. For gifts with a maker behind them, ICONCRAFT brings together hand-crafted pieces from artisans across Thailand, from traditional work to contemporary designs.

Luxury, department store and brands

ICONLUXE gathers the international fashion, jewelry and watch houses, several with interiors or products the mall says are exclusive to ICONSIAM; Chaumet chose it for its first boutique in Thailand. SIAM Takashimaya, the Japanese department store, anchors the everyday side, with fashion, home goods, toys and art toys spread through the rest of the building.

On the river

The riverfront is part of the visit. ICONSIAM Park on the 2nd floor is a planted viewpoint over the Chao Phraya with sculptures inspired by Thai craftsmanship, and River Park is an open-air space of more than 10,000 square meters used for festivals and events. Each evening The ICONIC Multimedia Water Features show plays along the riverfront; the mall bills it as Southeast Asia's longest fountain show, stretching more than 400 meters with jets reaching 35 meters.

Getting there

From Sukhumvit or Silom, take the BTS to Krung Thon Buri and change to the Gold Line for Charoennakorn Station, or ride to BTS Saphan Taksin and continue by boat from Sathorn Pier. A shuttle boat runs from Sathorn Pier and Si Phraya Pier, and the orange-flag Chao Phraya Express Boat calls on weekdays. Guests of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, The Peninsula Bangkok and The Siam can use their hotel's own boat service.

Restaurants inside ICONSIAM

The mall counts more than 150 places to eat, from Thai street-food counters to formal dining rooms. Thipsamai, the pad thai house from Maha Chai Road, runs a branch on the 6th floor in the Alangkarn zone, with quality overseen by the family’s fourth generation.

Blue by Alain Ducasse serves contemporary French cooking in ICONLUXE on the 1st floor and holds one MICHELIN star. Gaeng Sod, on the G floor at The Veranda, is Chef Ton (Thitid Tassanakajohn)’s curry house, where the pastes are pounded by hand in an open kitchen for each dish.

The ICONIC Multimedia Water Features show runs daily at 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the riverfront.

The first 2 hours are free, then THB 30 per hour for hours 3 to 6 and THB 60 per hour from the 7th hour. Spending THB 500, 1,000 or 2,000 extends free parking to 4, 6 or 8 hours in total.
Q. Can tourists claim a VAT refund?+
Yes, at stores showing the VAT Refund for Tourists sign. ONESIAM, the group behind ICONSIAM, says you need to spend at least THB 2,000 including VAT per store per day, show your passport to get the P.P.10 form with the original tax invoices, and take the goods out of Thailand by air within 60 days. The net refund is up to about 6%, claimed at the airport.
Q. Is there a tourist discount card?+
