If you want to know where to watch Muay Thai in Bangkok, the answer is the city's two historic stadiums: Rajadamnern Stadium in the Old City, which runs fight nights every day of the week, and Lumpinee Boxing Stadium on Ram Intra Road in the north of the city, home to ONE Championship's weekly Friday cards. Both sell tickets online, and both put the sport's rituals, live music and ranked fighters in front of you rather than a staged show.
Which one suits you depends mostly on the night you are free and how far you are willing to travel. Rajadamnern is central and easy to combine with a day in the Old City; Lumpinee is a longer trip but hosts some of the biggest televised events in the sport.
Rajadamnern Stadium: fights every night in the Old City
Rajadamnern Stadium opened in 1945 and calls itself the world's first Muay Thai stadium. Its history page credits it with the sport's first circular ring, the first official rule book in 1955 and the first championship belt and ranking system. The round building sits at 8 Ratchadamnoen Nok Road in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district, a taxi ride from the Grand Palace and in the same district as Wat Saket and the Golden Mount, so an afternoon of sightseeing can end at the ring. The stadium has about 3,500 seats around the ring and describes its program as seven nights a week of live fights. Each night belongs to a different promotion, which changes the feel of the evening:
- Traditional five-round cards (New Power, Petchyindee and Kiatpetch) follow the classic format, with more technical fights and a largely Thai crowd. These are the nights to choose if you want the sport as Thai fans watch it.
- Rajadamnern Knockout runs shorter three-round bouts aimed at a faster pace.
- Rajadamnern World Series (RWS) is the Saturday flagship: three-round bouts with Thai and international fighters, a five-round championship main event, open scoring announced after every round and a full stage production.
Before each bout, fighters perform the wai kru ram muay, a ritual dance of respect, accompanied by a live Muay Thai orchestra. It is worth arriving before the opening fight to see it. The stadium's newer addition is an immersive show projected onto its 1951 concrete dome, telling the history of the sport.
Seats at Rajadamnern
Seating runs from ringside up to an unreserved third-class tier at the top of the stadium, with club-class seats in between and a VIP lounge on the balcony. Club class is the stadium's own suggestion for families and first-timers, as it has a full view of the ring and easy access to food and drink. Getting to Rajadamnern
There is no rail station at the door. The stadium recommends the BTS to Ratchathewi or Victory Monument, or the MRT to Sam Yot, and then a taxi for the last stretch. Lumpinee Boxing Stadium: ONE Championship on Friday nights
Lumpinee Boxing Stadium was founded on December 8, 1956 and is run by the Royal Thai Army. It took its name from its original site on Rama IV Road beside Lumphini Park, but in February 2014 it moved to a larger, modern arena on Ram Intra Road in Bang Khen district, in the north of Bangkok toward Don Mueang Airport. Anyone who heads to Lumphini Park expecting to find the stadium next door will be disappointed.
Friday nights at Lumpinee belong to ONE Championship, the international promotion that stages its ONE Friday Fights series there every week, together with The Inner Circle. Cards mix Muay Thai, kickboxing and mixed martial arts, with a strong Thai presence. ONE also brings larger ONE Fight Night events to Lumpinee on some Saturdays. Getting to Lumpinee
Allow time. From Sukhumvit or Silom this is a long ride in evening traffic, so leave well before the first bout. The MRT Pink Line monorail runs along Ram Intra Road and links to the BTS Sukhumvit Line at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat; check a map for the station closest to the arena. Rajadamnern or Lumpinee: which to choose
- Short stay or first visit: Rajadamnern. It is central, has a card every night and fits into an Old City itinerary.
- Traditional Thai five-round fights: Rajadamnern on a Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday, the nights listed for its traditional promotions.
- International stars and big televised cards: Lumpinee on a Friday for ONE Friday Fights, or on a ONE Fight Night weekend.
- Staying in the north of the city or near Don Mueang: Lumpinee is the closer of the two.
Tips for a fight night
- Book ahead for the big nights. Rajadamnern says RWS Saturdays sell out quickly, and its ticket office opens at 3 p.m. for same-day buyers. Buy ONE tickets through ONE Championship's own event pages.
- Arrive early. The opening bouts and the pre-fight rituals are part of the experience, and seats fill as the main event approaches.
- Dress for heat. Rajadamnern advises light, breathable clothing and drinking plenty of water.
- Be respectful during the wai kru. The stadium asks spectators to stay respectful during the rituals.
- Children are welcome. Rajadamnern says there is no age limit to attend.
