Direct versus nonstop
Airlines use "direct" for a flight that keeps the same flight number from start to finish, even if it lands somewhere on the way. A nonstop flight does not land until it reaches its destination. On a direct flight with a stop you normally stay with the same flight number, but you may still leave the aircraft during the stop, and the stop adds time on the ground. Los Angeles: United via Hong Kong
United announced in April 2025 that it would start daily flights to Bangkok from Hong Kong, scheduled so that travelers from across North America could connect easily, and that it would be the only US airline flying to Bangkok. The Tourism Authority of Thailand reported that the first flight, UA 820 from Los Angeles via Hong Kong, arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport on October 26, 2025, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with Polaris business class, Premium Plus and economy cabins. It was the first US airline service to Bangkok since 2014.
We confirmed the route is still flying through Hong Kong International Airport's official flight records: on September 25, 2026, UA 820 arrived in Hong Kong from Los Angeles and departed for Bangkok, and UA 821 arrived from Bangkok and left for Los Angeles. United's own website could not be reached for this check, so confirm the current schedule when you book.
San Francisco: connect in Hong Kong
San Francisco has no through flight number to Bangkok, but United flies San Francisco to Hong Kong, and both United and the Tourism Authority of Thailand describe the Hong Kong to Bangkok flight as timed to connect with those services. Hong Kong's flight records for September 25, 2026 show United flights arriving from and departing to San Francisco. Because this is a connection rather than a through flight, allow for the transfer when you compare travel times.
Other US cities
From other US cities, the practical choice is a one-stop itinerary through an airline's hub: United's connections through Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hong Kong, or an Asian or Middle Eastern airline connecting through its home airport. Airlines add and drop long-haul routes often, so treat any list of "direct" US to Bangkok routes with care unless it links to the airline's own schedule. Thai Airways' winter 2026/27 network announcement, for example, adds Da Nang and more European frequencies but no US routes.
North of the border, the Tourism Authority of Thailand notes that Air Canada flies nonstop between Vancouver and Bangkok, which some West Coast travelers use as an alternative.
Arriving in Bangkok
United's flights land at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), east of the city center in neighboring Samut Prakan province. The Airport Rail Link runs from the airport into the city, with stops including Ratchaprarop near Pratunam, and taxis and hotel cars are the alternative with luggage.
