A menu built for sharing

Most dishes come in two or three portion sizes, so a table can order widely. Starters run from mixed appetizer platters and crispy rice noodles in sweet and sour sauce to crisp tartlets of minced prawn, carrot, corn and potato. The curries include fish-nugget green curry, roasted duck red curry and crab meat with acacia in red curry, the tom yum is made with river prawn, and the dips section includes shrimp paste dip with fried mackerel and fresh vegetables. Seafood has its own pages, from steamed goby with soy sauce to river prawns grilled over charcoal, steamed with spicy garlic and lime, or fried with salt.

Vegetarian dishes and Thai desserts

A separate vegetarian section offers a green curry, a clear tom yum of mushrooms and a Northeastern-style glass noodle salad, among others. Desserts are the classics: lemongrass jelly, mango sticky rice, tub tim grob of water chestnuts in coconut milk, and black sesame dumplings in hot ginger syrup.

Music, events and delivery

The live music is part of the draw, meant to recall the charm of old Bangkok. The restaurant also hosts private events, caters both on site and elsewhere, and delivers through the main Bangkok food delivery apps.

The Methavalai family

Baan Daeng by Methavalai Sorndaeng is the family's more relaxed restaurant in Sam Yan, serving the same long-standing recipes in a casual, modern space. Methavalai Residence Bangkok is the group's 36-room boutique hotel, just off the main avenue by the Democracy Monument, and the group also runs the beachfront Methavalai Hotel in Cha-Am.
