Jay Fai
About
Jay Fai is a shophouse kitchen on Maha Chai Road in Bangkok's old city that describes itself simply as Bangkok street food, and it holds one MICHELIN star. The cook behind the name is Supinya Junsuta, known to everyone as Jay Fai, and the goggles she wears at the wok have become as famous as her food.
It suits food-focused travelers who are happy to give part of a day to one celebrated plate, and it fits neatly into a morning or afternoon in the Old City. The shop is in Phra Nakhon, on the same stretch of Maha Chai Road as the pad thai institution Thipsamai, so the two are easy to combine in a single outing if you have the appetite.
What to order
The dish most people wait for is the crab omelette, which the MICHELIN Guide describes as crispy and golden-brown. The guide also points to the stir-fried prawns in yellow curry and to the noodle dishes, and the menu runs well beyond the famous plate, so a group sharing several dishes gets a better sense of the kitchen than a solo diner ordering one.
Plan for the wait
This is a walk-in operation with a queue, not a restaurant you book. The MICHELIN Guide calls the queuing system well organized but warns that you should arrive expecting to spend time standing in line, and to bring cash. Treat it as the main event of a half day rather than a quick stop between sights.
Why it matters
Jay Fai is one of the few places in the world where a MICHELIN star sits over what is essentially a made-to-order street-food kitchen. The guide lists it under street food and Thai cuisine and calls it a street food icon, and the star brought international attention and long queues to a plain dining room of tiled walls and ceiling fans.
Getting there
The shop is in the Samran Rat area of Phra Nakhon, the old royal district. The Old City has few rail stations, so most visitors arrive by taxi or ride-hailing app, and the area pairs naturally with the temples and museums of Rattanakosin.
