River City Bangkok opened in 1984 as an antiques centre on the Chao Phraya, the idea of Italthai Group chief Adisorn Charanachitta after browsing the antique markets of Paris. Dealers' galleries still fill its floors with pieces from Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal and China, and the building now adds exhibition halls, art galleries, film screenings, talks and its own auction house.

It suits collectors, design lovers and anyone who prefers an afternoon among Khmer bronzes and Chinese porcelain to another mall. The centre sits on the east bank in Talat Noi, Samphanthawong, at the end of Charoen Krung Soi 24, and it has its own pier, so the river is the easiest way in.

Antiques and galleries

The antiques dealers cover centuries of regional art, from Khmer and Burmese pieces to Ming and Qing ceramics and objects from the Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Rattanakosin periods. Tenants include Siam Masterpieces, Nagi Fine Arts, Adul Collection, Angkor Antiques, Himalayan Treasures and All Time Antiques, alongside lifestyle shops and contemporary galleries such as Ko Art and Gallery and The Art Haus. Exhibitions, auctions and events

Large temporary exhibitions run in the RCB Galleria halls, some ticketed, and the program also includes films, music nights, talks and the Italthai Portrait Prize. RCB Auctions has taken consignments from Thai family estates for close to four decades, selling porcelain, silverware, sculpture, jewelry and fine art, and it has offered online bidding through the Invaluable platform since 2021. Getting there

Chao Phraya Express boats (yellow, orange and green flag) stop at Si Phraya Pier next door, and Thai Smile Boat's Urban and City lines stop at River City's own Pier 3. From BTS Saphan Taksin, River City suggests taking a boat upriver from Sathorn Pier. From MRT Hua Lamphong, River City suggests a taxi or tuk-tuk. The building has its own car park.

Eating and river cruises

Viva and Aviv The River serves meals and drinks on the ground floor by the water, EVERYDAY Mookrata and Cafe does Thai-style barbecue by the river, and Starbucks, The Coffee Club, Black Canyon Coffee and Antday cover coffee. Two dinner cruise operators, River Star Princess and Wonderful Pearl, are based here, and River Star Princess boards from River City's Pier 1.
