About

Nitasrattanakosin, the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall, is a primer on old Bangkok housed in the former Building No. 1 on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, the avenue that leads into the royal city. The Privy Purse Bureau set it up as a learning center on Thai history, customs, culture and the monarchy, and it tells that story through models, four-dimensional media, multi-touch screens and interactive animation rather than original artifacts.

It works best early in a trip, as the hall itself suggests: a grounding in the Rattanakosin era before you see the real temples and palaces. Families and first-time visitors get the most from it, and the top-floor viewpoint looks straight out over the Old City. Part of the exhibition is shown by guided tour only, so the visit runs to a timetable.

Nine rooms, nine gems

Each of the nine rooms is represented by a gem, and a large LED wall with a flock of birds greets visitors at the start, followed by a timeline of Thai and world events since the founding of Rattanakosin. The rooms cover the first Chakri king, royal entertainment, ceremonies such as the Coronation and the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, architecture, communities and sights. The Prestige of the Kingdom room holds a miniature model of the entire Grand Palace and of the Emerald Buddha in all three of its seasonal costumes.

The second route is more theatrical. Visitors board a boat to explore life along the river, ride an electric tram to Charoen Krung Road, the country's first road, and finish in a room on the kings of the Chakri Dynasty from Rama I to Rama X.

Rattanakosin Sky View

The viewpoint on the top floor takes in the Loha Prasat of Wat Ratchanatdaram, Mahakan Fort and the Golden Mount of Wat Saket, which the hall lists among its nearby sights.

Weekends and extras

On Saturdays and Sundays the Youth Art Performance Stage puts on free shows of Thai dance, folk music and ensembles by school and youth groups at midday. The library is free to use for reading, and Golden Coffee by Golden Place serves coffee made from Royal Project beans from Doi Mae Salong in Chiang Rai.

Getting there

The Khlong Saen Saep canal boat stops at Phan Fa Lilat pier, about 350 meters away, and MRT Sam Yot is about a kilometer from exit 1. Parking is limited, especially at weekends, and the hall suggests Wat Ratchanatdaram instead.
