Wat Ratchanatdaram Worawihan is the temple of the Loha Prasat, the metal castle: a seven-level tower crowned with 37 metal spires that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) describes as the first of its kind in Thailand. King Rama III built the temple in 1846, near the end of his reign, to honor his granddaughter, Princess Sommanat Wattanawadi, who later became the first consort of King Rama IV.

It suits visitors who like a climb and a view, and anyone following the Old City along Ratchadamnoen Klang Road. The temple stands on Maha Chai Road, near the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall.

A castle instead of a chedi

Rama III ordered a metal castle here in place of a chedi, but it was finished only in the reign of King Rama V. It was restored again while Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat was prime minister, keeping as close as possible to the original design. The 37 spires stand for the 37 qualities that lead to enlightenment in Buddhist teaching, and TAT states that relics of the Buddha are enshrined at the top, on the seventh level. The center of the tower is hollow, with a spiral staircase rising through it.

The ordination hall and wihan

Chao Phraya Yommarat (Bunnag) drew up the temple's plans and oversaw the ordination hall, the wihan and the sermon hall. The ordination hall has gilded gables set with colored glass and enshrines the principal image, Phra Settamuni; the wihan holds a Buddha image named Phra Phuttha Chuthamnarasop.

The view from Rattanakosin Sky View

For the whole castle in one frame, the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall (Nitasrattanakosin) on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road runs a rooftop viewpoint, Rattanakosin Sky View, that takes in the Loha Prasat, Mahakan Fort and the Golden Mount of Wat Saket. The hall is a separate attraction with its own ticket.
