The best things to do in Bangkok in the morning follow the city's own early rhythm: a walk or run in Lumphini Park from 4:30 a.m., the flower market at Pak Khlong Talat before sunrise, Buddhist monks on their alms rounds, and the big temples at opening time, before the heat and the tour groups arrive. By late morning Bangkok is hot and busy, so an early start gives you the calmest and coolest hours of the day.

Walk the flower market at Pak Khlong Talat

Pak Khlong Talat, on Chak Phet Road near the Memorial Bridge, is Bangkok's main flower market. It is open around the clock but at its busiest before dawn, when boats and trucks arrive with flowers from nearby provinces and florists come to stock up for the day. Expect sacks of jasmine and marigold, orchids by the bundle and stalls stringing phuang malai, the flower garlands used as offerings at shrines and temples.

Next to the market, the Yodpiman River Walk has a riverside terrace facing the Thonburi bank and its own Chao Phraya Express Boat pier (N6/1). It is a short step from there to the Old City temples when they open.

Watch the monks' morning alms round

In the early morning, Buddhist monks walk through Bangkok's neighborhoods to receive food offerings from residents, a daily practice rather than a show. If you come across an alms round, watch quietly from the side of the street, keep your distance and do not use flash. Temples ask women not to touch monks or novices, so give way on narrow pavements. If you would like to take part, ask your hotel staff where and how local people make offerings nearby.

Exercise with the city in Lumphini Park

Lumphini Park opens at 4:30 a.m., and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration keeps it free to enter. At first light the lakeside paths fill with runners and walkers, and the park is known for its early exercise and tai chi groups. The loop around the park is roughly 2.5 km. Cycling is only allowed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., so the early hours belong to people on foot.

For a longer route, the elevated Green Bridge walkway leads from Lumphini to Benjakitti Forest Park, which also opens at 4:30 a.m. Its raised skywalk runs over wetland ponds, and bikes are allowed there from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Be at the temple gates at opening time

The Old City temples are at their quietest in the first hour after opening, and the morning light is softer for photos.

• Wat Pho opens at 8 a.m., earlier than most sights, and stays open until 7:30 p.m. Start with the Reclining Buddha before the crowds build in its hall.
• The Grand Palace opens at 8:30 a.m. Arriving at opening means shorter lines at the gate and a cooler walk around Wat Phra Kaew. Check the dress code before you set off; sleeveless tops and shorts are not allowed.
• The Erawan Shrine at Ratchaprasong opens at 6 a.m. and is free to enter; dress modestly and keep your voice down, as it is an active shrine.

From the river, Tha Tien pier is the stop for Wat Pho and Tha Chang for the Grand Palace, both on the Chao Phraya Express Boat.

Go to market

Fresh markets start their day early. Or Tor Kor Market, opposite Chatuchak Weekend Market and next to MRT Kamphaeng Phet, is run by the Marketing Organization for Farmers and known for premium fruit such as mango and durian. On Saturdays and Sundays you can combine the two, arriving at Chatuchak in the morning before its covered lanes heat up.

Where to have breakfast

• The Brasserie at Waldorf Astoria Bangkok serves a Thai and international breakfast buffet on the hotel's upper lobby, a short walk from the Erawan Shrine and Lumphini Park.
• The Island Bangkok, a few lanes from Khao San Road, opens daily at 8 a.m. and serves breakfast all day, which suits an Old City morning.
• Thipsamai, the pad thai shop on Maha Chai Road, opens at 9 a.m. (closed Tuesdays), so a mid-morning plate of noodles can round off an Old City walk.

Tips for an early start

• Use the rail lines. The BTS Skytrain runs from 5 a.m., so you can reach Lumphini or the river piers before the traffic builds.
• Carry water and a light layer. Mornings are the coolest part of the day, but temples need covered shoulders and knees.
