Bangkok or Phuket? Choose Bangkok if you want temples, palaces, food and a city to explore; choose Phuket if the trip is about beaches, the sea and rest. On a first visit to Thailand with a week or more, most travelers are better off doing both, a few days in Bangkok and the rest on the island, because a nonstop flight between them takes about 1 hour 25 minutes.

The two places do different jobs, and the weather does not line up the same way on each coast, which matters more than most comparisons admit. Every figure below comes from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), Airports of Thailand (AOT), the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the MICHELIN Guide and the airlines, read on October 7, 2026. For more numbers on the capital, see Bangkok by the numbers.

Weather figures are TMD's 1991-2020 normals for its Bangkok Metropolis station and its Phuket station in town; a "rain day" is TMD's count of rainy days. Passenger numbers are AOT's calendar-2025 totals. The flight time is AirAsia's route figure. MICHELIN counts are from the 2026 Thailand guide, announced November 27, 2025; the 19 Bib Gourmand entries are for Phuket province.

City or beach: what each trip is for

Bangkok is the place for Thailand's great sights. The Old City holds the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, and Wat Arun stands across the Chao Phraya. Add the markets, the river, the rooftop bars and the food: the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Thailand gives stars to 39 Bangkok restaurants, from Jay Fai to the three-star Sorn and Sühring. Bangkok is a river city, not a beach destination, so if sand and swimming are the point of the trip, it cannot stand in for the coast. Our guides to the Bangkok street-food scene and its MICHELIN-starred restaurants go further.

Phuket is a beach island first. TAT's own round-up of the island's beaches points families and couples who want a quiet place to swim and snorkel to Kamala, names Bangtao and Surin for beach clubs and nightlife, and lists Patong and Karon among the best known. In the north of the island, Mai Khao, Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Sai Kaeo beaches lie within Sirinat National Park, according to TAT. Phuket is not only sand, though. Old Phuket Town, in TAT's words, still has Sino-Portuguese town houses built in the era of the 19th- and early-20th-century tin trade, and the Thai Hua Museum on Krabi Road tells the story of the island's Hokkien Chinese community. That community's nine-day Phuket Vegetarian Festival runs October 10 to 18, 2026, TAT says, with street processions through Phuket City.

Food is the other big difference. Phuket has one MICHELIN-starred restaurant in the 2026 guide, PRU, which also holds a MICHELIN Green Star, as does Jampa. The province has 19 Bib Gourmand addresses for good-value cooking, against 44 in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. If eating well is your reason to travel, Bangkok has far more range; if a good dinner after a beach day is enough, Phuket delivers that.

Weather: why the coast you choose matters

Both places are hot all year, and both get most of their rain from May to October, the months of the southwest monsoon. TMD marks October as the month it starts to give way to the northeast monsoon. The difference is how much rain falls and how long it lasts. TMD's normals give Phuket 2,271.5 mm a year, against 1,702.2 mm in Bangkok, spread over about 175 rain days instead of 128. Phuket's wet months also run later: in November it still averages 178.2 mm over almost 16 days, while Bangkok has already dropped to 44.6 mm over five.

What that means for planning:

  • December to March is the driest stretch on Phuket, with February the driest month, and it overlaps Bangkok's cooler, drier months. This is the easiest time to combine the two.
  • April is Bangkok's hottest month, with an average high of 35.7°C (96°F). Phuket runs slightly cooler, at 34.2°C (94°F), and is already getting wetter.
  • May to October is wet in both places. In Bangkok, a rainy afternoon can go to a museum or a mall; on Phuket, beach days and boat trips depend on the sea. In mid-May 2026, for example, TMD forecast waves of 2 to 3 meters in the upper Andaman Sea and told small boats there to stay ashore for a week, so check TMD's warnings before you book a day out.
  • November is the month where they part: Bangkok is drying out, while Phuket is still in its wet season.

Thailand's other coast runs on a different clock. TMD's seasonal outlooks note that southern Thailand's east coast, on the Gulf of Thailand, gets its heaviest rain from the northeast monsoon around November and December. If you are flexible, that is worth knowing before choosing between Phuket and an island such as Ko Samui; our Bangkok to Koh Samui guide covers the Gulf side. For the capital month by month, see Bangkok weather by month and the best time to visit Bangkok.

Getting between Bangkok and Phuket

Fly. AirAsia gives the nonstop flight time from Bangkok to Phuket as around 1 hour 25 minutes, and Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Bangkok Airways fly the route, as does Thai Airways from Suvarnabhumi. Low-cost flights mostly leave from Don Mueang, so check which Bangkok airport your ticket uses; our airport comparison explains the difference. AirAsia advises arriving two to three hours before departure, so door to door the trip takes most of a morning or an afternoon.

Fares change daily. On October 7, 2026, Thai Airways' own route page showed round-trip economy fares between Bangkok and Phuket starting at THB 3,080 for December 2026 and THB 4,760 for most other months through mid-2027. Treat those as a snapshot, not a quote.

Driving is possible but long. Our guide to the drive from Bangkok to Phuket sets out the route and overnight stops, and how far Phuket is from Bangkok by plane covers the airports at each end, including the drive from Phuket's airport, in the north of the island, to the beaches.

How many days in each?

On a first trip, three to four days in Bangkok covers the Old City, the river, a market and a food night without rushing, and four to five days on Phuket leaves time for one beach base and a couple of boat days. With only five days, pick one: Bangkok if you have never been to Thailand and want the sights, Phuket if you mainly want rest. Our guide to how many days to spend in Bangkok and Phuket gives sample splits from five to 14 days, and the three-day Bangkok itinerary plans the city end.

If you have time for both

Most long-haul flights land in Bangkok, so the natural order is the city first and the beach last: sightseeing while you are fresh, rest at the end. Two things make the combination smoother:

  • Leave a buffer before your flight home. If your international flight leaves from Bangkok, fly back from Phuket the day before rather than connecting on the same day.
  • Look at the reverse route. Phuket International Airport also handles international traffic, so it can be worth pricing a ticket into Bangkok and out of Phuket.

If you would rather add a second Andaman stop than spend longer on Phuket, our guides to Phang Nga Bay and Bangkok to Krabi cover the nearest alternatives. If you want the sea without a domestic flight, our comparison of Bangkok and Pattaya looks at a beach city you can reach by road. For the wider plan, from entry rules to internal flights, see planning a Thailand trip through Bangkok.

What about cost?

We have not found an official or reputable source that compares what a visitor spends in Bangkok and in Phuket on the same basis and for the same year, so we do not publish daily budgets. What we can say from published prices is narrower: the flight between them is a real cost to add if you do both, and Bangkok's rail network gives you a cheap way around the city, as our guide to getting around Bangkok explains. Compare hotel prices for your own dates in both places before you decide how to split the nights.

Q. Is Bangkok or Phuket better for a first trip to Thailand?+

For sightseeing, Bangkok: it has the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, and 39 MICHELIN-starred restaurants in the 2026 guide. For beaches and rest, Phuket. With a week or more, most first-time visitors do both, because the nonstop flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes.

Q. How long is the flight from Bangkok to Phuket?+

About 1 hour 25 minutes nonstop, according to AirAsia. Flights leave from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, and AirAsia advises arriving two to three hours before departure, so allow most of a morning or afternoon door to door.

Q. When is the best time to visit Phuket and Bangkok together?+

December to March. TMD's 1991-2020 normals make February Phuket's driest month, with 24.0 mm of rain, and Bangkok is in its cooler, drier months. From May to October both are wet, and Phuket stays wet into November, when it still averages 178.2 mm.

Q. Does Phuket get more rain than Bangkok?+

Yes. TMD's normals give Phuket 2,271.5 mm a year over about 175 rain days, against 1,702.2 mm over about 128 days in Bangkok. September is the wettest month in both.

Q. Is Phuket more expensive than Bangkok?+

We found no official source that compares visitor spending in the two on the same basis, so we do not publish daily budgets. If you visit both, add the flight: on October 7, 2026 Thai Airways showed round-trip economy fares from THB 3,080 to THB 4,760 depending on the month.

Q. How many days should I spend in Bangkok and Phuket?+

On a first trip, about three to four days in Bangkok and four to five in Phuket fits a week to ten days. With five days or fewer, choose one place rather than splitting.

Q. Are there MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Phuket?+

One. The 2026 MICHELIN Guide Thailand gives a star to PRU in Phuket, which also holds a Green Star, and lists 19 Bib Gourmand addresses in the province. Bangkok has 39 starred restaurants in the same guide.
