How long it takes to get through immigration and customs in Bangkok has no fixed answer. Airports of Thailand, which runs Suvarnabhumi Airport, and Thailand's Immigration Bureau do not publish an average or target processing time, and we found no official figure to quote, so any number you read is someone's estimate. What you can control is how prepared you are when you reach each of the steps below, which is where most avoidable delays happen.
Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Bangkok's main international airport, stands in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province, just east of the city. This guide follows its official arrival procedure step by step.
Before you land: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card
Thailand's arrival card is now digital. Suvarnabhumi's own passenger guide sends arriving travelers to the Immigration Bureau's website for the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), and the official TDAC site states that no fee is required. Complete it before you fly, on the official site only, and keep the confirmation on your phone. Check the visa rules for your passport at the same time, since visa-exemption and visa-on-arrival lists change.
The arrival steps at Suvarnabhumi
Airports of Thailand sets out six steps for international arrivals in the Main Terminal:
- Arrive at BKK. Flights that park at the SAT-1 satellite building connect to the Main Terminal by the Automated People Mover: go down to level B2, ride to the Main Terminal and follow signs to the arrival hall on the second floor.
- Passport control. Automatic Border Control gates serve Thai, Singaporean and Hong Kong passengers. A priority lane serves diplomats, air crew, Thailand Privilege members, Buddhist monks, seniors aged 70 and over, pregnant travelers, passengers with infants and passengers with disabilities. Everyone else uses the staffed counters.
- Quarantine. Health control checks yellow fever certificates for travelers arriving from listed countries, and there are plant and animal quarantine stations.
- Baggage claim. International flights use belts 5 to 23.
- Customs. Take the Red Line if you have goods to declare and the Green Line if you do not.
- Onward transport. Taxis, Grab, limousines, buses and the Airport Rail Link.
What slows passport control down
The queue itself depends on how many flights land together, which no traveler controls. Delays at the counter are another matter. Have your passport, completed digital arrival card and onward details ready before you reach the officer, and check that your visa or visa-exemption conditions cover your stay. If you travel with children or with someone who qualifies for the priority lane, the lane is listed on the airport's arrival procedure.
If time at the airport matters, several Bangkok hotels arrange a fast-track arrival. Aman Nai Lert Bangkok includes fast-track arrival at Suvarnabhumi with every stay, Capella Bangkok books a VIP fast-track service at least 24 hours before your flight, Rosewood Bangkok needs 48 hours' notice, and Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel can arrange a meet-at-the-gate greeting and fast-track immigration.
Customs: the Green and Red lines
Customs is usually the quickest step, provided you choose the right channel. The Customs Department says the Green Line (Nothing to Declare) is for passengers carrying nothing liable to duty and no prohibited or restricted goods. It allows, duty-free:
- personal belongings in reasonable quantity worth no more than 20,000 baht in total, excluding prohibited or restricted goods and food;
- up to 200 cigarettes, or 250 grams of tobacco, or 250 grams of both combined;
- up to 1 liter of alcoholic beverages.
Anything over the tobacco or alcohol limits must be left in the box Customs provides, or you risk prosecution. If you have goods to declare, use the Red Line: officers inspect your baggage, and for personal belongings worth up to 200,000 baht that are not for commercial use they assess duty and tax at a flat rate, which you can pay in cash or by debit or credit card. Customs screens baggage using risk management, so some Green Line passengers are checked too.
Two more rules are worth knowing. Restricted goods, such as Buddha images and antiques, plants, animals, and food, medicine and cosmetics, need permits from the relevant agency. And under the Bank of Thailand's rules you must declare cash of more than THB 450,000 in baht notes, or more than USD 15,000 or its equivalent in foreign notes.
After customs: getting into the city
Public taxis wait on Level 1 of the Main Terminal between Gates 4 and 7; you take a queue ticket first, and the airport says waiting times depend on demand. Metered fares carry a THB 50 airport surcharge paid to the driver. Grab picks up at Level 1, Gate 4, and the airport's own limousine counters are on Level 2 in the arrival hall.
