What is inside Jim Thompson House?

The museum is the Bangkok home and Asian art collection of James H.W. Thompson, known as the Thai Silk King. Wikipedia says the complex has six traditional Thai-style houses, most of them 19th-century buildings dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya, with the largest, a weaver's house that is now the living room, coming from Bangkrua. It says construction began in 1958 and that the collection includes Buddhist statues, traditional Thai paintings and Chinese porcelain from the 16th and 17th centuries, along with art from Burma, Cambodia and Laos. The house stands on the Saen Saep canal.

Thompson founded his Thai silk company in 1948, according to Wikipedia, and disappeared from the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia on March 26, 1967. The museum is run by The James H. W. Thompson Foundation. The Jim Thompson Art Center, which holds exhibitions and educational programs, is in the same compound, according to the museum's homepage.

Jim Thompson's store list includes a shop at the house museum. Our guide to where to buy Thai silk in Bangkok covers that shop, the Surawong flagship and the mall branches, and our Jim Thompson flagship store listing has the Surawong address.

The museum describes itself as in the centre of Bangkok and reached by car, taxi, tuk-tuk or the BTS Skytrain, using National Stadium station exit 1. The address is 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road, and the museum's telephone number is (66) 2 216 7368. For ticket and fare basics, see our guide to buying a BTS ticket.

The museum also warns visitors to avoid strangers who approach them and claim the museum is closed for half a day on Buddhist or public holidays, then offer to take them elsewhere. It says it has no connection with such offers.
