Long-term averages from the Thai Meteorological Department show about 18 rainy days and 344 mm of rain in September, with daytime highs around 32 degrees C and nights around 25 degrees C. Showers tend to arrive in bursts, so a flexible day built around rail travel and indoor sights works well.

Bangkok weather in September
The Thai Meteorological Department supplies Bangkok's climate averages to the World Meteorological Organization. Their September figures, compared with the months either side, show why September has a reputation:

In short, it is warm and humid rather than cool, with rain on more days than not. During a heavy shower, the BTS Skytrain, the MRT and the river boats are a more predictable way to get around than a taxi stuck in traffic.

Royal Barge Procession rehearsals
The Royal Thai Navy is rehearsing the Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phraya River ahead of the Royal Kathin Ceremony at Wat Arun on November 6, 2026. TAT lists September rehearsals on the 3rd, 8th, 17th and 23rd, each expected to start at about 2:30 p.m., with public viewing from both banks between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun. The procession itself uses 52 royal barges crewed by some 2,200 navy personnel.
Bangkok's International Festival of Performing Arts and Music
From September 5 to October 17, 2026, the Thailand Cultural Centre Main Hall hosts 12 opera, ballet, dance and music productions by companies from nine countries, according to TAT's September calendar.
Indoor things to do when it rains
Aquariums and museums
- SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World fills two basement floors of Siam Paragon, next to BTS Siam, with an ocean tunnel, sharks, penguins and jellyfish. Allow at least 90 minutes.
- Museum Siam, beside MRT Sanam Chai, is a playful, interactive look at Thai identity, and easy to pair with Wat Pho between showers.
- The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is linked directly to BTS National Stadium, so you can reach its free galleries without stepping into the rain.
- MOCA Bangkok in Chatuchak holds a large private collection of Thai modern and contemporary art across several floors.
Evening entertainment
- Rajadamnern Stadium, the first purpose-built Muay Thai stadium, stages fights seven nights a week under a roof.
- The King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk has an indoor observation deck on the 74th floor as well as the open rooftop, useful if the weather turns while you are up there.
Learn to cook
A cooking class fills a rainy morning or afternoon. Baipai Thai Cooking School runs four-hour morning and afternoon classes in a Thai-style house north of the center, with a shuttle from Ratchayothin. Book at least a day ahead.
Outdoor sights: go early
Keep outdoor sights flexible: check the forecast each morning, do temples and parks while it is dry, and keep an indoor option nearby. Wat Pho and the Grand Palace are mostly open courtyards; bring a compact umbrella and shoes that cope with wet stone.
A sample rainy day in Bangkok
One way to string these together without spending long in the wet:
- Morning: take the MRT to Sanam Chai, visit Wat Pho while it is dry, then walk to Museum Siam next to the station.

- Afternoon: spend a couple of hours at SEA LIFE in Siam Paragon, or take the BTS one stop to National Stadium for the galleries of the BACC.
- Evening: finish with Muay Thai at Rajadamnern, or a night view from the indoor deck at Mahanakhon.
Practical tips for a rainy-season trip

- Carry an umbrella and a light layer. Malls, museums and trains are air-conditioned while the streets stay warm and humid.
- Build in slack. Give outdoor plans a backup day, and allow extra time to reach the airport when storms slow the roads.
