What river runs through Bangkok? The Chao Phraya, Thailand's major river. It forms at the meeting of the Ping and Nan rivers at Nakhon Sawan, flows about 372 kilometers south across the central plains, winds through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand in Samut Prakan province. In the city it divides the old royal quarter of Rattanakosin on the east bank from Thonburi on the west, and it is still a working highway for commuter boats, ferries and barges.
Where the Chao Phraya comes from
The river begins at Pak Nam Pho in Nakhon Sawan province, where the Ping and Nan rivers join. From there it flows south past Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya, then through Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Bangkok and Samut Prakan to the sea. At Chai Nat a branch splits off as the Tha Chin River, which runs roughly parallel and reaches the gulf separately. Below the Chao Phraya Dam, a network of canals (khlong) draws water from the river to irrigate the rice fields of the central plains.
A river reshaped by canals
The Chao Phraya you see in Bangkok is partly human-made. During the Ayutthaya period, kings ordered shortcut canals to cut through the river's long loops and speed the journey from the capital to the sea. One of them, Khlong Lat Bangkok, completed in 1542, became the river's main channel; the old loop survives as Khlong Bangkok Noi and Khlong Bangkok Yai, the canals that still wind through Thonburi.
The name itself is younger than the river. Written use of "Chao Phraya" dates from the reign of King Mongkut in the 19th century; earlier European maps simply called it the Menam, from the Thai word for river. Historians link the name to Bang Chao Phraya, an old settlement near the river mouth in what is now Samut Prakan.
The river through the city
Bangkok grew on both banks. When the city's special administrative status was created in 1972, the provinces of Phra Nakhon (east bank) and Thonburi (west bank) were merged. Many of the sights visitors come for face the water:
- The Grand Palace and Wat Pho on the east bank, in Phra Nakhon.
- Wat Arun directly across the river in Bangkok Yai, linked by cross-river ferries.
- The historic hotels of Charoen Krung and Bang Rak, including Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok and Shangri-La Bangkok, with The Peninsula Bangkok facing them from the Khlong San side.

How to experience the river
Chao Phraya Express Boat
The Chao Phraya Express Boat company, founded in 1971, runs commuter boats identified by the color of their flag. Its current lines include the Orange Line between Nonthaburi and Wat Rajsingkorn, the Yellow and Red Lines between Nonthaburi and Sathorn, and the Green-Yellow Line from Pakkret to Sathorn, each with a flat or zoned fare. The company says its air-conditioned catamarans, introduced in 2020, are designed to connect with the BTS and MRT. Sathorn pier sits by the Taksin Bridge, next to BTS Saphan Taksin, which makes it the easiest place to join the river from the Skytrain. Cross-river ferries and dinner cruises
Short cross-river ferries shuttle between piers on opposite banks, such as the crossing to Wat Arun. For an evening on the water, a dinner cruise like Meridian Cruise sails from ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank and loops past Wat Arun, the Grand Palace and the Rama VIII Bridge with a buffet on board.
Royal Barge Procession 2026
On November 6, 2026, the Royal Barge Procession will carry the Royal Kathin Ceremony along the Chao Phraya to Wat Arun. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, 52 royal barges crewed by about 2,200 Royal Thai Navy personnel will form a procession about 1,280 meters long, departing from Wasukri Pier and passing the Grand Palace. Full-dress rehearsals are scheduled for October 21 and 28, and viewing areas line both banks between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun.
