Safari World, in Khlong Sam Wa on Bangkok's northeastern edge, is really two parks in one: a Safari Park that you drive through among free-roaming animals, and a Marine Park you walk around, built around a program of animal and stunt shows. Its operator, Safari World Public Company Limited, describes the Safari Park as Thailand's first open zoo, modeled on the African savanna.

It suits families with children who have a full day to give it. The park is about 23 km in a straight line from Siam and the operator publishes no public transport directions, so treat it as a day out by car or taxi rather than a stop between other sights.

The Safari Park

The drive-through route runs for almost 5 km and takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Giraffes, zebras, deer, antelope, ostriches, lions, tigers, bears and wild buffalo live in open enclosures without cages, and you can go round in your own car or on one of Safari World's coaches. The zone also takes in a waterbird park, which the operator calls the only one in Bangkok, with thousands of birds overhead.

The Marine Park and the shows

The Marine Park holds dolphins, otters, sea lions, walruses and manatees, big freshwater fish such as the Mekong giant catfish, and a range of land animals and birds, set among shady trees. The day is organized around the shows: the company's latest annual report lists seven, featuring dolphins, sea lions, elephants, orangutans and birds, plus the Spy War action show and a Western cowboy stunt show. Between them there is a river safari boat trip, giraffe feeding, the Eggs World hatchery exhibition, lemurs from Madagascar, and flamingos and scarlet ibis.

The operator runs six restaurants with room for about 6,000 people, plus around 20 snack and drink kiosks. Tickets can cover one zone or the whole park, and an annual pass gives members unlimited visits for a year. For school and company groups, the company also hires out air-conditioned coaches.
