Rajamangala Hall

The park's landmark is a nine-sided hall built around the number nine, for the ninth reign: nine curved roof ribs meet at the apex, the roof tiles are yellow for the King's day of birth, and nine glass rooms around the outside hold exhibitions on his life and royal projects. In front, the Utthayan Maharat garden of golden shower trees surrounds three fountain lakes.

Gardens to look for

The botanical zone has Phlapphla Yot, a lake pavilion modeled on the Aisawan Dhipaya-art pavilion at Bang Pa-In Palace, and a Botanic Building with a herbarium and a botanical library. A geodesic dome houses desert plants, including Welwitschia, which the garden has grown since 2004 and was the first in Thailand to propagate from seed. There are Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, English, French and Italian gardens built with those countries' help, a herb garden of more than 400 species, an indoor rainforest plant building, a fern and orchid house, a maze, and a lotus and water lily garden with more than 200 varieties, among them the purple Queen Sirikit lotus.

Water, sport and events

Traphang Kaeo, a 40-rai reservoir that also holds floodwater for the eastern suburbs, has paddle boats and water bicycles for rent. Across it, the Chaichol Building houses the foundation office and restaurants. A sports center has a swimming pool, petanque and tennis courts, and the big lawn of Sanam Rat has a music pavilion for open-air concerts. Each year in early December the park hosts its Enchanting Flora festival.
