Sompong Thai Cooking School
About
Sompong Thai Cooking School is a family business on Soi Silom 13, started in 2008 by Auntie Sompong and her niece, Teacher Koy, after years in the restaurant trade. The first classes ran in the space in front of the family home, and the school grew room by room from there; the name, the family explains, means a dream come true.
It suits beginners, families and anyone with a dietary restriction: every student cooks at an individual station with their own stove and wok, lessons are in easy English, and the menus can be made vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal or allergen-friendly on request. The school is in Bang Rak, in the Silom area, and it stores luggage for free, which helps on a last day before a flight.
Morning and afternoon classes
The two morning classes start with a visit to a local market to see fresh Thai ingredients and how they are used. The afternoon class swaps the market for the Sompong Indoor Market, an air-conditioned room where students can smell and handle the ingredients before cooking. In every class the instructor cooks each dish first and students taste the original before making their own, and the cooking studio itself is air-conditioned.
What you cook
The Popular Menu covers tom yum goong, pad Thai, mango with sticky rice and a curry of the day, red, green, Massaman or Panaeng, made with a homemade paste. The Thai Favourite Menu, a morning class, swaps the curry for stir-fried holy basil with a fried egg and green papaya salad. Students also learn a little traditional fruit and vegetable carving, including a tomato rose, and take home a step-by-step recipe book.
Private classes and team building
The school takes one private booking a day, with a custom menu and a morning market trip, and runs a team-building format called Cooking Clash, a kitchen competition for company groups.
