Bangkok or Chiang Mai? Pick Bangkok for Thailand's great royal and riverside sights, its food scene and a big-city trip; pick Chiang Mai for a smaller, older walled city with mountains on its doorstep and cooler nights from December to February. If you have a week or more, see both: the flight north takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and an overnight train is the classic alternative.

This guide compares the two on the things that actually differ: what you will see, the climate (including the north's hazy dry season), food, how to travel between them and how to split your days. Facts come from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), Airports of Thailand (AOT), the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), UNESCO, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) as reported, the MICHELIN Guide and the airlines, read on October 7, 2026. For the capital in figures, see Bangkok by the numbers.

Sights: royal Bangkok or old Lanna

Bangkok has the sights most first-time visitors come to Thailand for: the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and Wat Arun across the river. Around them are the river boats, Chinatown, the Chatuchak Weekend Market, museums and malls. It is a city you get around by rail and boat rather than on foot; our guide to getting around Bangkok explains how.

Chiang Mai is a different kind of old. UNESCO's tentative-list file, submitted by Thailand in 2015, describes how King Mangrai founded the city in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna kingdom, and how its plan survives: the square inner walls and moat, the gates and corner bastions, and some 40 ancient temples inside the walls, with hundreds more outside. The best-known include Wat Chiang Man, which the file says stands on the site of the residence Mangrai used while he planned the city; Wat Chedi Luang; and Wat Phra Singh. The Old City is compact enough that a day of temple-walking is a natural plan, which is harder to do in Bangkok.

Chiang Mai's other draw is the mountain behind it. The same UNESCO file puts Doi Suthep-Pui National Park 16 km northwest of the Old City, protected since 1973 and covering 261 square km, with its highest peak at about 1,658 m. On the mountain stands the gilded stupa of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, built by King Kuena to enshrine a relic of the Buddha and, in UNESCO's words, the spiritual symbol of Chiang Mai. Bangkok has nothing like this within city limits; its nature escapes are day trips, such as the ones in our Khao Yai day-trip guide.

Climate: cooler nights, a hotter April and a hazy dry season

Chiang Mai's weather station sits 305 m above sea level, against 3 m in Bangkok, and it shows. From December to February, Chiang Mai's nights average 15.7 to 16.9°C (60 to 62°F), while Bangkok's stay above 23°C (73°F). Days in both are warm. Chiang Mai is not cooler all year, though: in March and April its afternoons are hotter than Bangkok's, averaging 36.7°C (98°F) in April. It is also drier overall, with 1,139.2 mm of rain a year against 1,702.2 mm, and both cities get most of their rain from May to October.

The burning season. Late in the dry season, smoke and fine dust (PM2.5) are a recurring problem in northern Thailand. TMD's normals show haze observed at Chiang Mai on 26.8 days in an average March and 22.1 in February, its peak, while Bangkok's haze days peak earlier, in December and January. TMD's haze count is a visibility observation, not a pollution measurement, so look at the PM2.5 figures too. In 2026, the Pollution Control Department's report for the morning of April 21 placed Chiang Mai among eight northern provinces in the red, health-risk band, against a national standard of 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter, according to Khaosod English. Chiang Mai province banned open burning outside managed zones through May 31, 2026, and a provincial meeting on April 30 counted 10,849 fire hotspots in the province since January 1, the same paper reported, with readings improving by then.

What to do with that: if you have breathing problems, or air quality matters a lot to you, think twice about a Chiang Mai trip from about February to April, and check the PCD's Air4Thai network, which has monitoring stations in central Chiang Mai, before you book. The cool season from November to January avoids both the worst of the haze and the rain. For the capital, see Bangkok weather by month.

Food: range in Bangkok, northern cooking in Chiang Mai

The MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026, announced November 27, 2025, gives stars to 39 Bangkok restaurants, including the three-star Sorn and Sühring. None of the starred restaurants in that guide is in Chiang Mai. The guide's value-for-money list is a closer contest: 18 Bib Gourmand addresses in Chiang Mai, three of them new in 2026, against 44 in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. If tasting menus and the widest range of cooking are the point, Bangkok wins clearly; for northern Thai cooking, Chiang Mai is the place to eat it. See our guide to Bangkok MICHELIN-starred restaurants and Bangkok street-food guide.

Getting between Bangkok and Chiang Mai

Fly if time matters. AirAsia gives the nonstop flight time as around 1 hour 10 minutes and lists Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia and Bangkok Airways on the route; Thai Airways also flies it from Suvarnabhumi. On October 7, 2026, Thai Airways' route page showed round-trip economy fares from THB 3,653 for November 2026 and THB 4,700 for most other months, a snapshot that will change. Chiang Mai's airport handled 9.5 million passengers in 2025, according to AOT.

Take the train if the journey is part of the trip. Northern Line trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, not the old Hua Lamphong station. SRT's own guide to Express 51, archived in February 2026, gives a 10:30 p.m. departure from Krung Thep Aphiwat and an 11:40 a.m. arrival in Chiang Mai, with the mountain section through Uttaradit, Lampang and Doi Khun Tan in daylight; the return, train 52, leaves Chiang Mai at 3:30 p.m. and arrives at 5:10 a.m. SRT lists second- and third-class cars, with fan or air-conditioned options, on this train. Our Bangkok to Chiang Mai guide compares the trains, flights and buses and explains how to book on SRT's D-Ticket site.

How many days in each?

For a first visit, three to four days in Bangkok covers the Old City, the river, a market and a food night. Give Chiang Mai three to four days as well: one or two for the Old City temples, one for Doi Suthep, and one for a day trip or a cooking class. With only four or five days in Thailand, stay in one city; the flight and transfers cost you most of a day. Our two-day Bangkok itinerary and three-day plan cover the capital.

If you have time for both

  • Bangkok first, then north. Most long-haul flights arrive in Bangkok. Fly up, or take the night train and save a hotel night.
  • Going further north? If Chiang Rai or Pai is on your list, see our guides to getting to Chiang Rai and getting to Pai.
  • Leave a buffer at the end. If your flight home leaves from Bangkok, come back from Chiang Mai the day before.
  • Add the coast if you have two weeks. With two weeks there is room for a beach stay as well. Our Thailand trip planner shows how the pieces fit.

What about cost?

Many travel sites say Chiang Mai is cheaper than Bangkok, but we have not found an official or reputable source that compares visitor spending in the two cities on the same basis and for the same year, so we do not publish daily budgets or percentages. Price your own hotel dates in both cities, and add the flight or train fare if you plan to do both.

Q. Is it better to spend more time in Bangkok or Chiang Mai?+

Spend more time in Bangkok if your priority is the Grand Palace, riverside temples, food and city life, and more in Chiang Mai if it is the walled Old City, its temples and Doi Suthep. On a first visit with a week or more, three to four days in each works well.

Q. How far is Chiang Mai from Bangkok by plane?+

A nonstop flight takes around 1 hour 10 minutes, according to AirAsia. Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia and Bangkok Airways fly the route, and Thai Airways flies it from Suvarnabhumi.

Q. How do I get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by train?+

Trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. SRT's guide to Express 51, archived in February 2026, gives a 10:30 p.m. departure and an 11:40 a.m. arrival in Chiang Mai. Other trains run on the same line; our Bangkok to Chiang Mai guide compares them.

Q. Is Chiang Mai cooler than Bangkok?+

At night in the cool season, yes. TMD's 1991-2020 normals give Chiang Mai an average January low of 15.7°C (60°F), against 23.4°C (74°F) in Bangkok. In April, though, Chiang Mai's average high of 36.7°C (98°F) is hotter than Bangkok's 35.7°C (96°F).

Q. When is Chiang Mai's burning season?+

Roughly February to April. TMD's normals show haze on 26.8 days in an average March at Chiang Mai. In April 2026 the Pollution Control Department placed Chiang Mai among eight northern provinces in its red PM2.5 band, as reported by Khaosod English. Check the PCD's Air4Thai readings before you book.

Q. Is Chiang Mai cheaper than Bangkok?+

Many travel blogs say so, but we found no official source that compares visitor spending in both cities on the same basis, so we do not publish budgets. Compare hotel prices for your own dates and add the fare between the two.

Q. Are there MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Chiang Mai?+

Not in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Thailand, which gives stars to 39 Bangkok restaurants. Chiang Mai has 18 Bib Gourmand addresses in the same guide, three of them new for 2026.
