Private Guides and Custom Tours in Bangkok: How to Choose

Private Guides and Custom Tours in Bangkok: How to Choose

A private guide is worth paying for when you want a flexible day, have children or mobility needs, or want to pace the temples yourself. A small-group tour usually costs less per person and suits solo travelers. Private tours are normally priced per group rather than per head, so the cost per person falls as more people share, and the admission fees for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, which we checked on October 3, 2026, are a separate matter to confirm with whoever you book.

This guide explains how the two formats differ, what a private day costs in admissions alone, how to choose a guide, and which private and custom tours are sold through Viator and Klook. We do not quote marketplace prices, because they change often; check the booking page.

Should you choose a private guide or a small-group tour?

These are general patterns, not guarantees. Operators differ, so read the inclusions of any tour before you pay. For a sense of how private pricing scales, Pink Chili cooking school, one operator whose own site we read, lists a private half-day class at 6,000 baht per person for one guest, 4,000 baht for two or three, 3,000 baht for four or five and 2,000 baht for six or more.

What do the main Bangkok temples cost on a private day?

A classic private day covers the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. As of October 3, 2026, the Grand Palace's own site lists foreign admission at 500 baht, which includes Wat Phra Kaew and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, with tickets sold from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wat Pho's site lists 300 baht for foreigners. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists Wat Arun at 200 baht for a foreign adult. That adds up to 1,000 baht a person before a guide's fee, unless your tour includes entry.

Dress rules apply to all three. The Grand Palace's site does not allow sleeveless tops, short or see-through tops, shorts, torn, tight or bike pants, mini skirts or sleepwear. Wat Pho advises women not to wear shorts above the knee. A guide can help, but you must dress correctly yourself; our guide to what to wear in Bangkok covers it. You can see the sites yourself too: the Grand Palace rents an audio guide for 200 baht in eight languages, with a passport or credit card as a deposit. Which private and custom Bangkok tours are available?

Viator and Klook list many private guides. We have not tried them, and the descriptions below come only from the listing titles and the durations shown on the pages, so check each page for the real inclusions.

If you only need a car and driver and plan to guide yourself, our guide to hiring a car with a driver in Bangkok explains how those charters work.

How do you choose a good guide?

  • Ask about licensing. The UK government's Thailand advice tells travelers to use a reliable, licensed tour guide. We could not load the Department of Tourism's licensing pages, so we do not describe the license cards or how to check them. The Tourism Authority of Thailand's complaint page says complaints about a tour company or tour guide go to the Department of Tourism, call center 02 401 1111 (24 hours), email tgtcenter@tourism.go.th. TAT also keeps a Tour Agent directory on its site.
  • Check who actually runs the tour. Marketplace listings are sold by an operator; ask for the operator's name and any Tourism Authority of Thailand license number, which established operators such as Co van Kessel and Follow Me show on their sites.
  • Agree the day in writing. Confirm the start time, pickup point, language, stops, whether admissions and lunch are included, and what happens if it rains or a site closes.
  • Plan around opening hours. Grand Palace tickets stop at 3:30 p.m. according to its site, so schedule it in the morning.
  • Know the pressure points. Being steered to commission shops is a pattern our tuk-tuk fare guide describes, along with the "closed today" line. The Tourist Police hotline is 1155.

What could a custom Bangkok day look like?

A common private day starts at the Grand Palace when it opens, crosses to Wat Pho, and ends at Wat Arun in the late afternoon, with lunch in between. For something different, you could swap in the Jim Thompson House or a river and canal ride, which our canal tour guide covers. Our two-day itinerary and three-day guide show how a private day fits into a longer trip, and the things to do near the Grand Palace lists stops that are close together.

If you prefer a smaller outing, see our guides to bike and tuk-tuk tours and cooking classes.

For a full day outside the city, see our guide to Khao Yai and elephant sanctuary day trips.

Q. How much does a private guide cost in Bangkok?+

Prices change, so check the booking page. Private tours are normally priced per group, so the cost per person drops as more people share. Admissions are a separate cost unless included: as of October 3, 2026 the Grand Palace lists 500 baht, Wat Pho 300 baht and Wat Arun 200 baht for foreign adults.

Q. Is a private guide better than a small-group tour in Bangkok?+

It depends on your group. A private guide lets you set the pace and change stops, which helps families and travelers with mobility needs. A small-group tour usually costs less per person and suits solo travelers.

Q. How do I know a Bangkok guide is licensed?+

The UK government advises using a reliable, licensed tour guide. We could not load the Department of Tourism's licensing pages, so ask the operator for its Tourism Authority of Thailand license number and use TAT's Tour Agent directory. Complaints about a tour company or guide go to the Department of Tourism on 02 401 1111.

Q. What are the Grand Palace's opening hours and dress code?+

The Grand Palace's site says tickets are sold from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It does not allow sleeveless tops, short or see-through tops, shorts, torn, tight or bike pants, mini skirts or sleepwear, and it bans drones. Wat Pho advises women not to wear shorts above the knee.

Q. Can I see the Grand Palace without a guide?+

Yes. The Grand Palace rents an audio guide for 200 baht in eight languages, with a passport or credit card as a deposit. Online tickets can be bought up to a month ahead and are non-refundable and non-changeable.

Q. How long is a private day tour in Bangkok?+

The private tours we reviewed on Viator are listed at about eight to nine hours, and one offers a choice of six or eight hours. Confirm the start time, pickup and inclusions on the booking page.

Q. Who should I call if I have a problem with a guide?+

Call the Tourist Police on 1155. For a complaint about a tour company or tour guide, the Tourism Authority of Thailand's complaint page points to the Department of Tourism's 24-hour call center, 02 401 1111, or tgtcenter@tourism.go.th. TAT's own contact center is 1672.
