The Best Seafood Restaurants in Sukhumvit, Bangkok

The best seafood restaurants in Sukhumvit fall into two camps: big, casual Thai seafood houses where the table orders crab, prawns and whole fish to share, and one tasting-menu restaurant built on southern Thai seafood. Here Hai on Ekkamai is the one the MICHELIN Guide recommends for value, and Sorn on Soi Sukhumvit 26 holds three MICHELIN stars. Between them sit long-running names such as Laem Charoen Seafood and Savoey, both with branches along the Sukhumvit corridor.

No single one is "the best" for every trip. The right choice depends on your budget, whether you can book ahead, and whether you want a quick dinner near your hotel or a meal to plan the evening around. The places below are all on or just off Sukhumvit Road, and each is checked against its own website or the current MICHELIN Guide.

Here Hai: crab fried rice on Ekkamai

Here Hai sits at 112/1 Soi Sukhumvit 63, the long side street better known as Ekkamai. It holds a Bib Gourmand in the current MICHELIN Guide Thailand, the guide's award for good cooking at a moderate price. The guide's inspector notes that the seafood is shipped in from Surat Thani in southern Thailand and cooked Thai style, and singles out the crab meat fried rice, cooked with a traditional technique that gives it a smoky aroma.

Two things shape a visit. The guide lists Here Hai as cash only and as not taking reservations, and it describes both floors as full every day, so arriving early is the practical plan. Portions are built for sharing, which makes it a good fit for groups; the guide also says the kitchen will tone down the spice on request.

Laem Charoen Seafood: the Rayong original, on Ekkamai

Laem Charoen Seafood began more than 40 years ago as a small family restaurant by the beach in Rayong, on Thailand's eastern seaboard, according to the company. Its signature is a whole sea bass deep-fried and dressed with fish sauce. The group now has dozens of branches, most inside shopping centers, but its standalone flagship is on Ekkamai at 5/3 Soi Sukhumvit 63, a few minutes up the same street as Here Hai.

The Ekkamai flagship suits families and anyone who wants an easy, bookable seafood dinner rather than a queue. The restaurant says it is a five-minute walk from BTS Ekkamai, and it has free parking and an online reservation form. Closer to the middle of Sukhumvit, there is also a Laem Charoen branch on the seventh floor of The Helix building at the EmQuartier mall in Phrom Phong.

Savoey: two Sukhumvit branches for curry crab

Savoey has been cooking Thai seafood for more than 50 years, according to the restaurant, and its menu runs from stir-fried mud crab in yellow curry sauce to tom yum goong with river prawns and steamed sea bass with lime and chili. It has two branches in the Sukhumvit area. Savoey Seafood Co. is a standalone restaurant at 120/4 Soi Sukhumvit 26, and Savoey Terminal 21 Asok is on the fifth floor of the Terminal 21 mall on Soi Sukhumvit 19.

The Terminal 21 branch is the convenient choice if you are shopping at Asok or staying nearby. The Rembrandt Hotel Bangkok on Soi Sukhumvit 18, for example, is one of the hotels that points shoppers toward Terminal 21. Both branches take reservations through Savoey's website.

Sorn: southern Thai seafood with three stars

For a seafood dinner to plan a whole trip around, Sorn is in a different league from the places above. The current MICHELIN Guide Thailand lists it with three stars and describes it as the first three-star Thai restaurant. Chef-owner Supaksorn Jongsiri cooks the food of southern Thailand, and the long tasting menu is built on southern seafood and produce, from river prawns to Phuket lobster and blue crab, before a shared course of charcoal-steamed rice and sides.

Sorn is on Soi Sukhumvit 26, a short way down the same soi as Savoey Seafood Co., but the two meals could hardly be more different. Tables are released a month at a time, so book as soon as your dates are fixed; the FAQ below has the release schedule.

Somboon Seafood: the curry crab institution

If you are willing to leave Sukhumvit, Somboon Seafood is the restaurant most associated with Bangkok's fried curry crab, which it has served since 1969. All eight of its branches are in Bangkok. The nearest to Sukhumvit is inside Central Embassy on Phloen Chit Road, the stretch that runs into Sukhumvit Road from the west, and the Surawong branch is the one listed in the MICHELIN Guide.

• An easy family dinner you can book: Laem Charoen Seafood on Ekkamai, or Savoey on Sukhumvit 26.
