Somboon Seafood Bantadthong
About
Somboon Seafood is the Bangkok restaurant that has served its original fried curry crab since 1969, and the Bantadthong branch carries on its first dining room. Founders Khun Pichai and Khun Chitra opened in a single shophouse beside Chulalongkorn University in Sam Yan; when that lease ended in 1991, the original restaurant moved here to Soi Chulalongkorn 8, where it has grown into one of the group's most popular branches.
It suits first-time visitors who want the curry crab from the family that made it famous, and groups and families who like big shared platters of seafood. The branch sits in the university district of Pathum Wan, and the restaurant's own map places it between MRT Sam Yan and BTS National Stadium stations, so it fits easily around a day at the Siam malls.
What to order
Fried curry crab is the order at nearly every table: whole crab fried in a curry sauce with scallions and chilli, served with jasmine rice. The curry crab meat version saves the work of cracking shells, and a black pepper crab offers a sharper alternative. Around it, the menu covers roasted freshwater prawns with glass noodles in a hot pot, grilled river prawns, tom yum goong, deep-fried sea bass with sweet fish sauce and stir-fried water mimosa or morning glory.
Eight branches, all in Bangkok
Somboon now runs eight branches, all in Bangkok, and says it has none in other provinces or overseas: Bantadthong, Surawong, Ratchada, Udom Suk, Sam Yan, Central Embassy, Siam Square One and CentralWorld. The Surawong branch, opened in 1990, is the one listed in the MICHELIN Guide; the Sam Yan branch returned to the site of the first restaurant in 2008. Several of the newer branches sit inside shopping centers.
Booking
Tables can be reserved online through the restaurant's website, and larger groups or private rooms are arranged by email. The branch also takes calls and LINE messages.
