Things to Do in Sukhumvit, Bangkok: A Station-by-Station Guide

The best things to do in Sukhumvit are its two city parks, Benjakitti and Benjasiri, the malls at Phrom Phong and Asok, and some of Bangkok's most sought-after restaurants and rooftop bars. Sukhumvit is easiest to explore on the BTS Sukhumvit Line, so this guide to things to do in Sukhumvit, Bangkok, works station by station: Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo and Ekkamai. A good day here starts in a park early, moves indoors to the malls through the afternoon heat, and ends with dinner and a rooftop.

How do you get around Sukhumvit?

Sukhumvit Road runs east from central Bangkok with the elevated BTS Sukhumvit Line above it, and numbered side streets, or sois, branch off both sides. Asok is the main interchange: BTS Asok connects to MRT Sukhumvit on the Blue Line, and Terminal 21 is reached from exits of both stations. Most places below are a station exit plus a short ride up a soi.

What is there to do near BTS Nana?

Near BTS Nana, the draw for visitors is two hotel rooftops on Sukhumvit Sois 11 and 13, both evening venues with dress codes. They work best at the end of a day spent elsewhere on the line, and both are close to the station, so the Skytrain is the easy way home.

• Above Eleven is a Peruvian-Japanese rooftop restaurant and bar on the 33rd floor of Fraser Suites Sukhumvit on Soi 11, about 500 meters from BTS Nana by the building's own figure. The kitchen cooks Nikkei dishes such as cebiche and sushi rolls, and the bar is built around pisco.
• Spectrum Lounge & Bar fills the top two floors of Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit on Soi 13, which connects to BTS Nana by a skybridge. Level 29 serves dinner to a live band, and the open-air Level 30 turns to cocktails and DJs.

What can you do near Asok?

Asok is the easiest place on Sukhumvit to combine shopping, green space and dinner. Terminal 21 stands on the BTS and MRT stations, Benjakitti Park is one MRT stop or a short ride away, and the Siam Society is on Asok Montri Road, also known as Sukhumvit 21.

Terminal 21 Asok

Terminal 21 Asok is built as a shopping airport, with each floor dressed as a different city, from Rome and Paris to Tokyo, London and San Francisco. The mall counts more than 600 shops, many of them small clothing and accessory units, and the Pier 21 food court on the 5th floor is one of the least expensive sit-down meals in the area. Benjakitti Park

Benjakitti Park is a 450-rai forest park beside the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, designed as a wetland forest around four large ponds. A 1.6 km elevated skywalk runs through the planting and links to the Green Bridge across to Lumphini Park, and there are separate walking, running and cycling routes and pedal boats on the ponds. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration lists BTS Asok, MRT Sukhumvit and MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre as the stations. Go early or late in the day; the park opens at 4:30 a.m.

The Siam Society and Kamthieng House

The Siam Society, at 131 Asoke Montri Road, runs lectures, study trips and performances, and its grounds hold the Kamthieng House Museum, a teak northern Thai house moved from Chiang Mai. Check before you go: the Siam Society says the museum has been closed for restoration since December 30, 2023, until further notice.

Dinner near Asok

Cabbages & Condoms, on Sukhumvit Soi 12, has served a long Thai menu since 1986, and its income supports the Population and Community Development Association, a family-planning NGO. The restaurant puts it at an 8-minute walk from BTS Asok. What is there to do at Phrom Phong?

Phrom Phong is Sukhumvit's shopping center. EM District's three malls, Emporium, EmQuartier and EmSphere, connect to BTS Phrom Phong and to each other by walkways, and Benjasiri Park, a small public park on Sukhumvit Road near Soi 24, gives the area its green space. Several of Bangkok's best-known restaurants are on the sois nearby.

Emporium, EmQuartier and EmSphere

Emporium, at 622 Sukhumvit Road, is the luxury mall of the three, with a department store and designer brands. EmQuartier, across the road, is known for the Helix, where restaurants are stacked on floors 6 to 9 around an indoor garden, and for a Gourmet Market that stocks more than 40,000 products. EmSphere, the newest, holds an IKEA city store and the UOB Live concert arena. Ask at the tourist desk for the free EM District tourist card, which gives a 5% discount on regular-priced items at the department stores and Gourmet Market. Benjasiri Park

Benjasiri Park opened in 1992 to mark Queen Sirikit's 60th birthday, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, which calls it the green lung of Phrom Phong. It is compact, with shade trees, a playground and a collection of contemporary sculptures, the largest a giant commemorative coin bearing the queen's image. It is an easy half hour between malls, especially for families.

Where to eat around Phrom Phong

• Gaggan, on Sukhumvit Soi 31, serves chef Gaggan Anand's progressive Indian tasting menu as a piece of food theatre. The current MICHELIN Guide Thailand gives it one star.
• Sorn, on Sukhumvit Soi 26, cooks Southern Thai food and holds three MICHELIN stars. Tables are released a month at a time, so plan weeks ahead.
• Err, on Sukhumvit Soi 32, is a relaxed Thai drinking-food restaurant with a menu curated by the chefs of Bo.lan.

What to do in Thong Lo?

Thong Lo, Sukhumvit Soi 55, is the area for cafes, community malls and nightlife rather than sightseeing. Spend an afternoon at theCOMMONS, a four-level community mall on Thong Lo 17 with independent food and coffee vendors, then come back after dark for dinner, cocktails and a rooftop.

• Rabbit Hole, at 125 Thong Lo, is a three-story cocktail bar that opens at 7 p.m.
• Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar fills the 45th, 48th and 49th floors of Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit on Soi 57, with a 360-degree view and bookable tables.
• Tichuca Rooftop Bar, on the 46th floor of the T-One Building on Soi 40, is built around a bamboo tree that lights up after dark, and takes walk-ins only.
• Khua Kling Pak Sod Thong Lo, on Soi 53, cooks family recipes from southern Thailand.

What is there to do at Ekkamai?

Ekkamai, Sukhumvit Soi 63, is quieter than Thong Lo and runs parallel to it. The two stops for visitors are a gin bar designed by Ashley Sutton and a Japanese discount mall, and both are on Soi 63.

• Iron Balls Distillery & Bar, on the ground floor of Park Lane Ekkamai, is the nautical-themed home bar of Iron Balls gin, the Thai-made gin created by Sutton.
• Donki Mall Thonglor, despite the name, is on Soi 63, and the mall itself lists both Ekkamai and Thong Lo stations. Don Don Donki fills the first two floors with Japanese groceries, snacks and household goods.

Tips for a day in Sukhumvit

• Go to the parks early. Benjakitti Park opens at 4:30 a.m., and the mornings are cooler and shadier than midday.
• Use the malls for the hottest hours. Terminal 21 and the EM District malls are on the BTS, so you can move between them without much time outdoors.
• Dress for the rooftops. Above Eleven, Spectrum and Octave all set dress codes that rule out sandals or sportswear; Tichuca has no official code but checks passports at the door.
• Carry ID for bars. Thailand's legal drinking age is 20, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand notes that alcohol sales can be suspended on election days and major Buddhist holidays.
