Wat Kalayanamit Woramahawihan stands on the Thon Buri bank of the Chao Phraya at the mouth of Khlong Bangkok Yai, and its great seated Buddha, Luang Pho To, rises 14 meters inside the central wihan. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) notes that the image is highly revered, especially by Thai-Chinese worshippers, who call it Sam Po Hut Kong.

A nobleman's gift

In 1825 Chao Phraya Nikhon Bodin (To Kalayanamit) gave his house and land to King Rama III and bought more land nearby to build a temple, and the king named it Wat Kalayanamit. The king then built the royal wihan himself and gave it its principal image.

Luang Pho To

Phra Phuttha Trai Rattananayok, known as Luang Pho To, is a stucco image in the subduing-Mara posture, more than 10 meters across the lap, set in the large wihan at the center of the temple. Between the small wihan and the ordination hall, in front of the royal wihan, a newly built bell tower holds what TAT describes as the largest bell in Thailand.

The ordination hall and library

The ordination hall is smaller than the wihan. Its principal image, created by Rama III, is in the Palilai posture, and TAT states that this is the only temple in Thailand whose principal image takes that posture. Murals inside show the life of the Buddha and everyday life in Rama III's time. The temple's library, Ho Phra Tham Monthian Thaloeng Phrakiat, keeps Pali scriptures from the reign of King Rama IV.
