The best things to do in Bangkok on Valentine's Day are the ones that use the city's height and its river: dinner on an open-air terrace high above Silom, a sunset or evening cruise on the Chao Phraya, or a long Thai tasting menu at one of the city's Michelin-starred restaurants. Valentine's Day is one of the busiest nights of the year for these places, and some treat it as a special date with stricter booking terms, so the single most useful thing you can do is book early.

Dinner with a view
Sirocco at lebua
Sirocco is the open-air Mediterranean restaurant on the 64th floor of State Tower in Bang Rak, with tables set outside beneath the tower's golden dome and the skyline and river below. lebua itself says the terrace comes into its own at dusk, which is exactly when a Valentine's dinner starts. The menu offers a chef's tasting menu, à la carte dishes and an oyster and caviar list.
Plan ahead: lebua lists Valentine's Day among its special dates, when bookings need a 100% non-refundable deposit. There is also a smart-casual dress code, so leave the flip-flops and athletic wear at the hotel. If you would like to stay in the same tower, see lebua at State Tower.
Mahanakhon SkyWalk, before or after dinner
The Mahanakhon SkyWalk, at the top of King Power Mahanakhon in Silom, has an indoor deck on the 74th floor and an open rooftop on the 78th, where a glass floor hangs 310 meters above the street. It is open until midnight, so it works as a nightcap after dinner. Tickets are sold in the tower's ground-floor lobby.
On the river
A sunset or dinner cruise
Meridian Cruise sails from ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank twice a night. The Sunset Cruise, of just under two hours, is timed for the light on the temples and bridges; the later Dinner Cruise sails after dark past the illuminated Wat Arun and Grand Palace, with a buffet, a resident band and a traditional Thai dance performance. Both follow the same route, so choose by the light you want.

For a quieter, earlier dinner, Supanniga Eating Room at Tha Tien sits on the bank of the Chao Phraya directly across the water from Wat Arun. It cooks family recipes from Trat and Isan, including crab dishes that suit a shared table, and an early booking lets you watch the light go over the temple.
Afternoon tea by the river
At The Siam, a riverside hotel in Dusit, non-guests can book afternoon tea at The Story House, and the hotel sells the set per couple as well as per person. It is a gentler alternative to a late dinner, or a way to start the day's celebrations.
Tasting menus for a special occasion
- Le Du, chef Thitid "Ton" Tassanakajohn's modern Thai restaurant on Soi Silom 7, holds one Michelin star. The choice is a four- or six-course tasting menu built on Thai seasonal produce, so dinner does not take up the whole night. Tell the restaurant about a special occasion when you book.
- Sorn, on Soi Sukhumvit 26, cooks Southern Thai food and holds three Michelin stars. Tables are released a month at a time: for February, international guests can email from midnight Bangkok time on January 15, and online bookings open on January 25. The MICHELIN Guide lists Sorn as closed on Saturdays, so check which day February 14 falls on.
- Sra Bua by Num Weerawat, inside Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, serves contemporary Thai tasting menus, including one built around native plants, herbs and roots, with a zero-proof pairing at every meal.

Valentine's Day by daylight
Flowers from Pak Khlong Talat

A boat on the lake in Lumphini Park
In Lumphini Park, on the edge of Silom, you can rent a swan-shaped paddle boat or a rowing boat on the lake, then walk the shaded paths as the day cools. The park is close to both Sirocco and Le Du, so it fits neatly before an evening in Silom.
Bang Rak, the "village of love"
The name of Bang Rak district sounds like the Thai word for love, which has made its district office a popular place for couples to register their marriages, especially on Valentine's Day. If you are simply visiting, the district is also home to Sirocco, Le Du and the Mahanakhon SkyWalk, which makes it a natural base for the evening.
