Songkran 2027, the Thai New Year, is a public holiday in Bangkok from Tuesday, April 13 to Thursday, April 15, 2027, according to the Bank of Thailand's 2027 holiday list. In Bangkok it means temple visits and water poured over Buddha images in the morning, and organised water play on Silom Road, Khao San Road, Siam Square and at riverside malls in the afternoon. As of October 7, 2026, neither the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) nor the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had published a 2027 Bangkok programme, so the zones, hours and rules below are from the 2026 festival.

Facts in this guide come from TAT, the BMA, UNESCO, the Bank of Thailand and Thai government and news reports of official announcements, read on October 7, 2026. Zones and closures are announced a week or two before the holiday, so check again in early April.

When is Songkran 2027 in Bangkok?

The three official Songkran days are fixed: April 13, 14 and 15. In 2027 they fall Tuesday to Thursday. Chakri Memorial Day, another public holiday, falls the week before, on Tuesday, April 6, 2027. The Bank of Thailand's list showed no extra Songkran holidays for 2027 when we checked; the government sometimes adds special holidays later, so look again in March.

Bangkok's organised events usually run longer than the holiday itself. In 2026, TAT listed large-scale Bangkok events from April 9 to 15, and the government's road-safety campaign, known as the "seven dangerous days", covered April 10 to 16.

What is Songkran?

UNESCO added "Songkran in Thailand, traditional Thai New Year festival" to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 6, 2023, at the committee's 18th session in Kasane, Botswana. It was Thailand's fourth element on the list, after Khon masked dance drama (2018), Nuad Thai massage (2019) and Nora dance drama (2021).

UNESCO describes Songkran as the sun's annual passage into Aries, which marks the traditional start of the year. It falls in mid-April after the rice harvest, when people reunite with their families and pay respect to older adults, ancestors and Buddha images; pouring water symbolises cleansing, reverence and good fortune. TAT explains the main rituals:

  • Song Nam Phra: pouring scented water over Buddha images at a temple on Songkran Day, April 13. Pour onto the body of the image, not the head. Many malls and shops set out an image and a bowl of scented water, so you can take part without going to a temple.
  • Rod Nam Dam Hua: young people pour scented water over their parents' hands or feet and receive a blessing, usually on the second day.
  • Chedi sai: sand stupas built in temple grounds to replace earth carried away on worshippers' shoes during the year.

TAT notes that the gentle sprinkling of blessed water grew into the street water play visitors know today. For temple mornings, our Wat Pho visiting guide has hours and the dress code.

Where are the Songkran water zones in Bangkok?

These were the main organised Bangkok events in 2026, from TAT and the BMA. Expect most to return in 2027, but the dates, hours and closures will be re-announced.

The festival is big and has grown fast. The BMA counted 4.95 million participants across 94 Bangkok venues from April 10 to 15, 2026, almost double the 2.56 million it counted in 2025. Siam Square drew 1.53 million, ICONSIAM 1.47 million and Silom Road 652,974. If you want room to move, a mall event or Benjakitti Park is easier than Silom or Khao San.

What are the rules for water play in Bangkok?

For 2026 the BMA ran a "Songkran GEN New" campaign. At the Silom zone it banned high-pressure water guns, alcohol, powder and inappropriate clothing, and it screened people at checkpoints with walk-through gates, CCTV, face recognition and police dog units. The BMA asked people to conserve water and play respectfully. Expect similar measures in 2027, but read the 2027 announcement for each zone.

TAT's own etiquette advice applies everywhere:

  • Leave people out who are not playing. Never splash people on motorcycles, monks or pregnant women, or anyone clearly on their way to work or trying to stay dry. Water play usually stops around sunset.
  • Use clean water. Fill guns and buckets from safe sources, and do not throw ice.
  • Ask before using powder, and keep it away from eyes. Note that the BMA banned powder in its 2026 Silom zone.
  • Dress for getting wet. TAT points out that thin, light-coloured clothes become see-through; it suggests a swimsuit under your clothes. Our guide to what to wear in Bangkok covers fabrics and temple dress.
  • Seal your valuables. Put phones, wallets and passports in waterproof bags, and carry a change of clothes if you have plans later.

Songkran is also the hottest part of the year in Bangkok. Our April in Bangkok guide has the temperatures and ideas for the rest of the month, and why Bangkok is so hot has heat-safety tips.

Is Songkran dangerous on the roads?

Road travel is the biggest risk of the holiday. Over the 2026 seven dangerous days, April 10 to 16, Thailand's Road Safety Operation Centre recorded 1,242 road accidents, 1,200 injuries and 242 deaths nationwide, and Bangkok had the highest number of deaths of any province, 21. In the government's six-day figures, speeding caused 43.59% of accidents and drink-driving 25.64%, and motorcycles were involved in 69.43%.

The BMA's own Bangkok count for April 10 to 15, 2026 was 20 road deaths, 17 of them in motorcycle crashes; nine of those killed were not wearing helmets. TAT's advice is simple: if you ride a motorbike, wear a helmet and keep out of water zones, and do not drive after drinking. Our Is Bangkok safe guide covers traffic and night-time precautions.

How do you get around Bangkok during Songkran?

Use the rail lines. On April 13, 2026 the Department of Rail Transport recorded 1.23 million trips on Bangkok's rail systems, with the Green Line (the BTS) busiest because it serves Siam Square and Silom. Passengers were asked to empty water containers before entering stations, because wet floors cause slips, so pour out your water gun before you go through the gates.

Taxis and ride-hailing cars cannot enter the closed streets, and roads near the zones are slow. Khao San Road has no rail station, so many visitors combine a train with a short taxi ride or walk; see our guide to getting around Bangkok for boats and buses.

What is open and closed over Songkran?

Banks close on April 13, 14 and 15, 2027, which are financial institution holidays in the Bank of Thailand's calendar. Many Thais travel upcountry to spend the holiday with family, and TAT warns that trains, planes, buses and hotels upcountry can book up months ahead, so reserve onward travel early if Bangkok is not your only stop. Several malls host Songkran events, but opening hours for museums and attractions over the holiday are set venue by venue, so check before you go.

Where should you stay for Songkran?

Choose your base by the celebration you want:

  • Silom and Sathorn put you near the Silom water zone and on both the BTS and MRT.
  • Banglamphu, around Khao San Road, is for the late-night party; the side streets close to traffic on the main days.
  • Sukhumvit, near Asok, is close to Benjakitti Park and an easy BTS ride to Siam.
  • The riverside suits a calmer stay, with ICONSIAM's events across the water.

Our where to stay in Bangkok guide compares the areas, and hotels near the BTS lists properties that make the rail trip easy. Book early: Songkran is one of the busiest weeks of the year.
