Things to Do Alone in Bangkok at Night: A Solo Traveler's Evening Guide

The best things to do alone in Bangkok at night are the ones that work just as well for one person as for a group: grazing along the street-food stalls of Yaowarat, watching the skyline light up from an observation deck, taking an evening boat on the Chao Phraya, and sitting in on a live Muay Thai card. None of them needs a companion, most need no booking, and several run until midnight.

This guide picks solo-friendly evenings by type, with the practical details that matter when you are on your own: when things open, how to get there and how to get back.

Night markets and street food

Eating is the easiest way to spend a night alone in Bangkok. Street stalls and market food courts are made for single diners: you order one dish, eat it and move on to the next without anyone waiting on you.

Yaowarat (Chinatown)

The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists Yaowarat Road among Bangkok's street-food areas that stay busy well into the night. The neon signs above the road, the grills set up on the pavement and the sheer number of stalls make it the obvious first stop. Pick stalls with a quick turnover, carry small notes, and walk the side lanes as well as the main road.

Weekend and evening markets

According to the tourism authority, the Chatuchak Weekend Market extends into the night on weekends, and it also names Talad Rot Fai (the Train Night Market Srinakarin) and Jodd Fairs among the city's night markets. These are good places to eat your way around at your own pace. Check each market's own pages for current nights and hours before you go, since they change more often than the landmarks do.

Rooftop views

A view of Bangkok after dark is one of the easiest solo evenings to plan, because you can arrive when you like and stay as long as you like.

• Mahanakhon SkyWalk: the observation deck at King Power Mahanakhon is open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight, with last access at 11 p.m. The 78th-floor rooftop has a glass tray 310 meters above the street. Take the BTS Silom Line to Chong Nonsi.
• The Dome at lebua: lebua says Sky Bar and its other bars take walk-ins only, so you can simply turn up. For dinner, Sirocco, the open-air restaurant on the 64th floor of State Tower, requires a reservation and has a smart-casual dress code.

An evening on the river

The Chao Phraya is where Bangkok looks its best at night, with Wat Arun and the Grand Palace lit on the banks. There are two easy ways to enjoy it alone.

A dinner or sunset cruise

Cruises sell seats per person, so a single ticket is simple. The Meridian Cruise leaves from ICONSIAM: its Dinner Cruise sails from 8 to 9:45 p.m. with Thai dance performances, and the Sunset Cruise passes Wat Arun, the Grand Palace, Rama VIII Bridge and Asiatique between 5 and 6:30 p.m.

Riverside promenades

Asiatique The Riverfront, a former warehouse district on Charoen Krung Road, is open every day from 11 a.m. to midnight. It has around 300 meters of riverside promenade, food stalls from around Thailand and Asiatique Sky, a 60-meter Ferris wheel. On the Thonburi bank, the tourism authority notes that ICONSIAM stages fountain shows every night.

Live Muay Thai

A fight night is one of the most social things you can do alone: you sit among the crowd, and the action gives everyone something to talk about. Rajadamnern Stadium on Ratchadamnoen Nok Road holds fights every night of the week. Gates open at 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and the stadium's immersive dome show begins at 8:10 p.m. Book online through the stadium's website.

Late-night food

If the evening runs late, Thipsamai Pad Thai on Maha Chai Road in the Old City is open from 9 a.m. to midnight every day except Tuesday. The shop took the name Thipsamai in 1966, near the Pratu Phi intersection, and pad thai is the whole reason to go.

Getting around safely on your own

• Save the Tourist Police number. The tourism authority points visitors to the Tourist Police hotline, 1155, which runs around the clock, and to the Tourist Police app.
• Keep valuables close in crowded markets and on busy piers, and carry some cash in small notes for stalls.
• Tell someone your plans and share your live location if you are heading somewhere new.
