What to do near Bangkok airport depends first on where the airport actually is. Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main international airport, is not in the City of Bangkok at all: Airports of Thailand gives its address as Bang Phli district in Samut Prakan province, about 31 kilometers east of Bangkok. The sights closest to it are therefore in Samut Prakan and on Bangkok's eastern fringe, and the best of them are two museums built by the same founder and a large outlet mall. With more than a few hours, most people head into the city instead.

The Ancient City (Muang Boran), Samut Prakan
The Ancient City calls itself the largest private outdoor museum in the world. It is a large park in Samut Prakan filled with reconstructions of Thai temples, palaces and other landmarks, arranged in northern, northeastern, central and southern zones, so that a visit works as a tour of the country's architecture in a single day. It was created by Lek Viriyaphant, a Bangkok businessman and collector born in 1914, who wanted to preserve traditional Thai architecture and craftsmanship.
The site itself says it is about a 40-minute drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport, and under an hour from Bangkok. Opening hours and the foreign-visitor admission prices are in the FAQ below. Allow at least half a day, and it only makes sense on a long layover if you leave plenty of time for the drive back.
The Erawan Museum, Samut Prakan
Lek Viriyaphant also created the Erawan Museum, a giant three-headed elephant in copper, which the museum describes as the largest of its kind in the world. The museum is arranged in three levels that represent the underworld, the human world and, inside the elephant's body, heaven. The grounds also have a pilgrimage path with shrines and artifacts from Buddhism and Hinduism.
It is the easiest of the Samut Prakan sights to reach without a car. The museum directs visitors to Chang Erawan station (E17) on the BTS Sukhumvit Line, exit 2, which also makes it a simple stop on the way into or out of central Bangkok by rail. Hours are in the FAQ.
Siam Premium Outlets Bangkok
For shopping, the nearest large destination is Siam Premium Outlets Bangkok, an outlet center that opened in June 2020 off the Bangkok to Chon Buri Motorway (Route 7). The Tourism Authority of Thailand put it at about 15 minutes from Suvarnabhumi and listed more than 200 brands at opening. Its own directions send drivers off the motorway at exit 5 toward On Nut Road and then about 2 kilometers along Luang Phaeng Road.
Without a car, the outlet suggests the Airport Rail Link to Lat Krabang station and then bus 333 or a taxi. It also runs a paid shuttle bus from Siam Paragon in central Bangkok; the times and fare are in the FAQ.
Staying inside the airport
On a short connection, leaving the airport is rarely worth the risk. Suvarnabhumi's main terminal and its SAT-1 satellite have lounges, shops, waiting areas, meditation rooms and prayer rooms. Going into central Bangkok instead
If you have most of a day, central Bangkok has far more to offer than the airport's surroundings. The Airport Rail Link, taxis and buses all run into the city; our guide to getting from Bangkok airport to the city compares them. Good choices for a few hours in town:
- The Erawan Shrine and the malls around Ratchaprasong, reached from BTS Chit Lom.
- The Jim Thompson House, a short walk from BTS National Stadium.
- The Grand Palace and Wat Pho in the Old City, if you have a full day.

Leave time to get back
Airports of Thailand advises arriving at least two hours before a flight. Traffic on the roads east of the city can be heavy, and in late September 2026 the Tourism Authority of Thailand reported that the airport was asking passengers to allow at least three hours for international flights during flooding, and to avoid the waterlogged Lat Krabang route.
