Where is Banyan Tree Bangkok? Address, stations and getting there

Banyan Tree Bangkok is at 21/100 South Sathorn Road in the Sathon district, in the business area between Silom and Lumphini Park. The nearest rail stations are MRT Lumphini and BTS Sala Daeng, and the hotel runs a free scheduled tuk-tuk shuttle to both. If you are coming for the famous rooftop, note that Vertigo and Moon Bar on the 61st floor are temporarily closed for a redesign.

The address and the neighborhood

The hotel's official address is 21/100 South Sathorn Road, Sathorn, Bangkok 10120. Google lists the subdistrict as Thung Maha Mek. South Sathorn Road is one side of the wide, divided Sathorn Road, a corridor of office towers, embassies and hotels that runs from the Lumphini end down toward the Chao Phraya. Banyan Tree sits near the Lumphini end, so the green space of Lumphini Park is much closer than the river.

The tower is easy to pick out: a slim, pale 61-storey building topped by an open-air deck. That height matters mostly for views from the rooms and the rooftop; at street level it is a business-district address, with offices around it rather than shops.

A near neighbor on the same road is The Sukhothai Bangkok, a low-rise hotel built around gardens and ponds, which shows how different two hotels on one street can be.

Getting there by MRT, BTS and tuk-tuk

The hotel names MRT Lumphini, on the Blue Line, as its nearest subway station and BTS Sala Daeng, on the Silom Line, as its nearest Skytrain station. Instead of promising a walking time, it runs a complimentary scheduled tuk-tuk shuttle that connects guests with both stations; the timetable is kept at the concierge desk. That shuttle is the practical answer on a hot afternoon or in a rainstorm.

For sightseeing in the Old City, the hotel suggests two routes to the Grand Palace: about 40 minutes by taxi, or the BTS to Saphan Taksin and a river boat upstream, about 50 minutes in all. The rail-and-boat route is the one to use in rush-hour traffic, because it avoids the roads entirely.

From the airports

Suvarnabhumi Airport is about 35 km from the hotel, a 45 to 60 minute drive depending on traffic. Don Mueang Airport, used by many regional and low-cost flights, is about 28 km away, 30 to 45 minutes by car. The hotel can arrange a limousine for either airport. Those times assume the expressways are moving; allow more in the evening rush.

What is within reach

Lumphini Park is the closest large attraction, with about 2.5 km of paths around its lake that are popular with joggers in the early morning and evening. Silom Complex is the nearest shopping mall, and One Bangkok, a newer district of shops, restaurants, offices and hotels beside the park, has direct MRT access.

From Sala Daeng, the BTS Silom Line runs one stop to Chong Nonsi for the King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk, the observation deck at the top of the pixelated Mahanakhon tower. Further along the same line, Saphan Taksin puts you at the river for boats to Chinatown, Wat Arun and the Old City.

Vertigo and Moon Bar are temporarily closed

Many people search for Banyan Tree Bangkok because of Vertigo, the open-air grill restaurant on the 61st floor, and the adjacent Moon Bar. The hotel says Vertigo and Moon Bar, and Vertigo TOO on the 60th floor, have been temporarily closed from 16 June for a redesign. Its dining page promises a refreshed experience but gives no reopening date, so check it before planning an evening around them.

The rest of the hotel is operating, including the spa, the 21st-floor pool and restaurants such as Saffron Grill and the Romsai buffet. Is Sathorn a good place to stay?

Sathorn suits travelers with meetings in the Silom and Sathorn offices, runners who want Lumphini Park close by, and anyone who prefers a quieter evening base to the Sukhumvit bar streets. It is less convenient if your trip is mostly Old City temples, where a hotel on the river saves time.
