Bangkok or Singapore? Choose Bangkok for temples and palaces, a sprawling street-food city and much lower prices; choose Singapore for a compact, easy-to-navigate city-state with gardens, hawker centres and more MICHELIN stars, in a city Mercer ranks among the most expensive in the world. They are only about 2 hours 25 minutes apart by air, so on a longer Southeast Asia trip you can easily see both.
The comparison below uses each country's official statistics, weather service and immigration pages, plus Airports of Thailand, the MICHELIN Guide and Mercer, read on October 7, 2026. Many figures come from our Bangkok by the numbers research, which compares Bangkok with other big Asian cities.

Notes: Bangkok's population is the Department of Provincial Administration's count of registered residents, as reported by Khaosod English; many people who live and work in Bangkok are registered elsewhere. Singapore's is the Department of Statistics' total population, and its land area is from the Singapore Land Authority. Climate figures are the 1991-2020 normals of the Thai Meteorological Department and the Meteorological Service Singapore; Singapore's mean is the average of its twelve monthly means. Metro figures count metro-standard lines only, from Wikipedia's list of metro systems, and leave out Bangkok's Airport Rail Link and SRT Red Lines and Singapore's LRT. Changi's total is from a TTG Asia report of Changi Airport Group figures.
Which suits whom
- First trip to Southeast Asia, with sightseeing as the priority: Bangkok. Its temples and palaces are the main reason most people come, and a UNESCO-listed former capital, Ayutthaya, is within a day trip.
- A short stopover or a first trip to Asia with children: Singapore is the simpler city to cover in two or three days, because the whole country covers 744.3 square km of land, less than half the area of Bangkok.
- Food travelers: either. Bangkok for street food and Thai cooking at every level; Singapore for hawker centres and a slightly larger MICHELIN-starred list.
- Budget travelers: Bangkok. On Mercer's 2024 ranking it sits 127 places below Singapore.
- A dry-season trip: Bangkok has a clear dry season from about November to March; Singapore's weather service says it has no distinct dry season.
Sights: temples and palaces, or gardens and a planned city
Bangkok is the stronger choice for historic sights. The Grand Palace, the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and Wat Arun on the Chao Phraya are the core of any first visit, and the riverside Old City, Chinatown and the Chatuchak Weekend Market fill several more days. Within a day trip is the Historic City of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991; see our Ayutthaya day-trip guide.
Singapore trades scale for polish. Its most celebrated green space, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. The whole country is a single city on 744.3 square km of land, so neighborhoods, gardens and museums are close together. The Singapore Tourism Board counted 16.9 million international visitor arrivals in 2025. For Bangkok, Euromonitor International's 2025 city ranking put it first in the world by international arrivals, at an estimated 30.3 million. The two figures are measured differently, so read them as a sense of scale rather than a like-for-like gap.
Food: street food against hawker centres
Both cities are serious food destinations, in different ways. Bangkok's street food is the heart of its reputation; our Bangkok street-food guide and Chinatown guide are the places to start. Singapore's everyday food is centred on hawker centres, and UNESCO added "Hawker culture in Singapore" to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020.
At the top end, the counts are close. The MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026, announced November 27, 2025, gives stars to 39 Bangkok restaurants: two with three stars (Sorn and Sühring), eight with two and 29 with one. The MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2026, its tenth edition, announced August 4, 2026, gives stars to 45: three with three stars, nine with two and 33 with one, in a selection of 307 establishments. For good value, Singapore's guide has 97 Bib Gourmand entries; Thailand's has 44 in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. The comparison is not exactly even, because Singapore's guide covers the whole country while the Bangkok count is one city in Thailand's guide. Our Bangkok MICHELIN guide lists the starred restaurants.
Weather: a dry season, or none
Both cities are hot and humid all year, and neither has a winter. The real difference is the shape of the year. Bangkok has a clear dry season: TMD's normals give December just 11.6 mm of rain and January 23.6 mm, while the wet months, May to October, peak in September at 335.9 mm. Singapore gets more rain in total, 2,113.3 mm a year, and the Meteorological Service Singapore says it has no distinct wet or dry season. Its rain is heaviest from November to January, during the wet phase of the Northeast Monsoon, and February is its driest month. Singapore averages 171 rain days a year by its own definition, against about 128 in Bangkok by TMD's, so the counts are not exactly comparable.
For a trip that combines the two, late January to early March suits both. That is the windy, relatively dry late phase of Singapore's Northeast Monsoon, according to its weather service, and Bangkok is still in its dry season, with 21.4 mm of rain in an average February. See Bangkok weather by month and the best time to visit Bangkok.
Getting around
Both have modern metro networks of a similar size: 203 km of BTS and MRT line in Bangkok and 246.6 km of MRT in Singapore, on Wikipedia's count of metro-standard lines. Singapore's network serves a country with less than half Bangkok's area. Bangkok's 1,568.7 square km take longer to cross, so plan each day around a rail line or a river pier; our guide to getting around Bangkok and guide to Grab in Bangkok help.
Cost
We do not publish daily budgets, because we have found no official source that compares visitor spending in the two cities on the same basis. The best consistent indicator is Mercer's Cost of Living City Ranking 2024, as reported by Vulcan Post, which put Singapore second-most expensive of 226 cities and Bangkok 129th. Mercer prices a basket of goods, services and housing for international assignees rather than tourists, so treat it as an indicator rather than a holiday budget. If budget matters most, Bangkok goes further; our budget guide to Bangkok has ideas.
Visas and entry for US travelers
Entry rules change, so confirm both countries' official pages before you book. As of October 7, 2026:
- Thailand. The United States is one of 60 countries and territories whose citizens may enter Thailand without a visa for tourism stays of up to 30 days, under the revised scheme that took effect September 15, 2026, according to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It replaced the earlier 60-day exemption. Thailand also asks arrivals to complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online. Our guides to the Thailand visa for US citizens and the Digital Arrival Card have the details.
- Singapore. US passports are not on the list of travel documents that need a visa, on the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) page. ICA officers set the length of stay on arrival and send it to you as an electronic visit pass by email, and every traveler must submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days before arriving, counting the day of arrival.
Getting between Bangkok and Singapore
Fly. AirAsia gives the nonstop flight time as around 2 hours 25 minutes and lists Thai Lion Air, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia, Batik Air and Bangkok Airways on the route; Thai Airways also flies it. Bangkok is an hour behind Singapore, so set your watch forward on the way south. On October 7, 2026, Thai Airways' route page showed round-trip economy fares from about THB 9,090 to THB 10,600 depending on the month, a snapshot rather than a quote. Check which Bangkok airport your flight uses; our comparison of Bangkok airports explains the difference.
If you have time for both
Three to four days in each city covers the main sights without rushing. Two practical points:
- Book an open-jaw ticket. Flying into one city and home from the other saves a backtrack; Suvarnabhumi and Changi handled 62.9 million and 69.98 million passengers in 2025.
- Leave a buffer. If your long-haul flight leaves from the other city, make the hop the day before rather than on the same day.
With a week or more in Thailand itself, consider adding a beach or the north before flying on; our guides to splitting Bangkok and Phuket and Bangkok to Chiang Mai cover the two most common additions. For a Bangkok plan, start with the three-day itinerary and our guide to where to stay.

Bangkok for temples, palaces, street food and lower prices; Singapore for a compact, easy-to-navigate city with gardens, hawker centres and 45 MICHELIN-starred restaurants. Because the flight takes about 2 hours 25 minutes, many travelers visit both.
Yes, by a wide margin on the best consistent measure we found: Mercer's 2024 Cost of Living City Ranking put Singapore 2nd and Bangkok 129th of 226 cities. Mercer measures costs for international assignees rather than tourists, and we do not publish daily budgets.
Bangkok covers more ground, 1,568.7 square km against Singapore's 744.3 square km of land. Singapore's official total population, 6.21 million at the end of June 2026, is higher than Bangkok's 5.42 million registered residents, but many people living in Bangkok are registered elsewhere.
A nonstop flight takes around 2 hours 25 minutes, according to AirAsia. Singapore is one hour ahead of Bangkok.
Not for a short tourist trip, as of October 7, 2026. Thailand allows US citizens up to 30 days visa-free for tourism since September 15, 2026, and US passports are not on Singapore's visa-required list. Both countries require an online arrival card. Rules change, so check the official pages before you go.
Singapore, narrowly: 45 starred restaurants in the 2026 Singapore guide against 39 in Bangkok in the 2026 Thailand guide. Singapore's guide covers the whole country, while the Bangkok figure is for one city.
Late January to early March. Singapore's weather service describes that as the relatively dry late phase of the Northeast Monsoon, with February its driest month, and Bangkok is still in its dry season. Singapore's wettest spell runs from November to January.
