Looking for things to do near MBK Bangkok? You do not need to go far. MBK Center sits on the Pathumwan intersection at the western end of the Siam shopping district, and within about ten minutes on foot you can reach a free contemporary art center, the Jim Thompson House Museum, an aquarium under Siam Paragon and one of the city's best-known seafood restaurants. The activities near MBK below are ordered roughly by distance, with straight-line figures measured from the mall.
MBK itself is at 444 Phayathai Road and opens daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. BTS National Stadium station has a connecting walkway into the mall, which makes it a practical starting point for a half day around Siam.
Inside MBK Center
Before you head out, it helps to know what the mall covers. MBK describes itself as organized into zones: mobile phones and IT, a souvenir zone for handicrafts and gifts, fashion and beauty, gold and jewelry, home goods, a supermarket, a dining zone, and an entertainment zone with a cinema and an arcade. A service zone brings together banking, postal services and luggage storage, which is handy if you are between hotel check-out and a late flight. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (about 200 meters)
Directly across the Pathumwan intersection, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) is the city's public art center. Its main exhibitions are free, the galleries fill the upper floors of a white, curving building, and the third-floor entrance connects straight to BTS National Stadium, so you can cross from MBK without going down to street level. It is the easiest cultural stop near MBK and a good indoor break on a hot afternoon. BACC closes on Mondays.
Jim Thompson House Museum (about 550 meters)
A short walk west down a lane off Rama I Road, the Jim Thompson House Museum is the former home of James H.W. Thompson, the American known as the Thai Silk King, who took Thai silk to buyers abroad. In the late 1950s he assembled the house from several traditional Thai houses beside the Saen Saep canal, and the museum shows it with his collection of Asian art. The main house can only be seen on a guided tour, offered in several languages, and the museum gives BTS National Stadium, exit 1, as the way in.
SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World (about 600 meters)
East along Rama I Road, the basement of Siam Paragon holds SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World, an aquarium with an ocean tunnel, shark tanks and a penguin room. It suits families and anyone who wants a couple of hours indoors, and the aquarium publishes daily feeding times that are worth planning around. The walk from MBK passes Siam Discovery on the way.
Somboon Seafood Bantadthong (about 650 meters)
South of MBK in the university district, Somboon Seafood's Bantadthong branch on Soi Chulalongkorn 8 carries on the restaurant's original dining room and its famous fried curry crab. The branch sits between BTS National Stadium and MRT Sam Yan, so it fits well at the end of a day around the malls. Somboon takes reservations online through its website.
Fine dining at Siam Kempinski (about 650 meters)
For a special-occasion meal, Sra Bua by Num Weerawat is the contemporary Thai tasting-menu restaurant inside Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, which has direct access to Siam Paragon. It is a short walk from MBK along Rama I Road.
Erawan Shrine and Ratchaprasong (about 1.1 kilometers)
Keep going east past Siam Paragon, or ride one stop past Siam on the BTS Sukhumvit Line to Chit Lom, and you reach the Ratchaprasong intersection. The Erawan Shrine, an open-air shrine to the four-faced Brahma in front of the Grand Hyatt Erawan, is a place of active worship where devotees bring flowers and incense and traditional dancers perform. Entry is free, and visitors are asked to dress modestly and keep out of the way of people praying.
Getting around from MBK
- BTS: National Stadium is the station for MBK, one stop west of Siam, where the Silom and Sukhumvit lines meet.
- MRT: MBK's own directions tell MRT riders to change to the BTS at Silom and Sala Daeng and ride to National Stadium.
