Banyan Tree Bangkok review: a spa-led Sathorn tower while its rooftop is closed

Banyan Tree Bangkok review: a spa-led Sathorn tower while its rooftop is closed

Banyan Tree Bangkok is the slim 61-storey tower on South Sathorn Road whose name has long been tied to Vertigo and Moon Bar, the open-air venues on its roof. Those rooftop venues, and two of its restaurants, are temporarily closed for a redesign, so book it now for what it still does well: large rooms, a destination spa, a 21st-floor pool and a free tuk-tuk to the Skytrain and the subway. It suits business travelers heading to Sathorn and Silom offices and couples on a spa-focused break. If a rooftop dinner is the main reason for your trip, check the reopening news first or book elsewhere.

What is closed, and what that changes

The hotel's dining page says Vertigo and Moon Bar on the 61st floor, Vertigo TOO on the 60th, the Chinese restaurant Bai Yun and the Thai restaurant Saffron closed temporarily from 16 June for what it calls a new chapter, with no reopening date given when we last checked. That removes the building's best-known reason to visit. The rest of the hotel is operating: the rooms, spa, pool, health club, three restaurants and bars in the tower, and two river dinner cruises.

For a view from the top of the city in the meantime, the King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk observation deck is in Silom, and Sirocco at lebua serves dinner in the open air under its golden dome.

Location and getting around

The address is 21/100 South Sathorn Road in Thung Maha Mek, Sathon, in the business district. The nearest stations are MRT Lumphini and BTS Sala Daeng, and the hotel runs a complimentary scheduled tuk-tuk to both, which solves the most awkward part of staying on Sathorn: crossing a wide, busy road to reach the train. The concierge has the timetable.

The hotel puts Lumphini Park and the nearest malls within a 7 to 10 minute walk, which makes an early run or walk in the park practical. For the Grand Palace, it suggests the BTS to Saphan Taksin and a river boat, about 50 minutes door to door.

Rooms and suites

Space is the room story. Standard rooms are 48 square meters with floor-to-ceiling windows and a separate bath and shower, and most categories share that layout, differing by floor and by whether they face the city or the park. Panorama Club and Vertigo Club rooms add the 19th-floor Club Lounge, which covers breakfast, afternoon tea, an evening happy hour and a daily allowance of laundry, a practical perk on a business trip.

Wellbeing Sanctuary rooms are set up for spa-focused stays. For families, the Two-Bedroom Serenity Suite of 119 to 143 square meters has a king bedroom, a twin bedroom, two bathrooms and a kitchenette, and sleeps four with lounge access included.

Spa, pool and fitness

With the rooftop closed, the spa is the hotel's strongest reason to book. Its signature treatments include the Royal Banyan, a massage using a warm herbal pouch, and the Tropical Rainmist, which adds a Thai herbal wrap and a ginger bath. Beyond treatments, it runs beginner Muay Thai, sound healing with singing bowls, yoga and breathing sessions, so a spa break can fill a whole day.

The 25-meter outdoor pool on the 21st floor is lined with greenery and served by a juice bar, and the health club is open 24 hours with daily classes, a steam room and a sauna. The pool closes in the early evening, so plan swims for the daytime.

Dining and bars now open

  • Saffron Grill is the newest Thai restaurant, cooking over white charcoal, longan wood and coconut husk and using regional ingredients such as northern ma kwaen pepper. It serves lunch and dinner daily, in smart casual dress.
  • Romsai is the international buffet in a garden setting with cascading water, open for all three meals and for Sunday brunch.
  • Saisons is a cocktail bar organized around Thailand's three seasons, with Thai craft spirits, small plates and an afternoon tea.
  • Saffron Cruise and Apsara Cruise are the hotel's dinner cruises. Saffron Cruise is a two-deck boat serving a four-course Thai dinner from ICONSIAM; Apsara is a restored teak rice barge with a five-course Thai menu, sailing from River City past Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. Both involve a taxi or train to the pier, so allow for traffic.

For more choice nearby, our Bangkok restaurant guide covers Silom and Sathorn, including the modern Thai tasting menus at Le Du on Soi Silom 7.

Meetings and recognition

The business side is well equipped. The Banyan Ballroom on the 10th floor has a five-meter ceiling and natural light and holds up to 400 guests, and there are 12 further meeting rooms, while Club Lounge guests get up to three hours of boardroom use per stay. The hotel lists Forbes Travel Guide Recommended status for each year from 2023 to 2026. It is not in the MICHELIN Guide's Bangkok hotel selection.

Who it suits, and the alternatives

Banyan Tree Bangkok suits spa-minded couples, business travelers who want a large room and a club lounge, and families who can use the two-bedroom suite. While the rooftop is closed, it suits less well travelers who chose it for Vertigo, and anyone who wants a river view or a kids' club.
