Park Hyatt Bangkok review: big rooms and a rooftop above Ploenchit BTS

Park Hyatt Bangkok review: big rooms and a rooftop above Ploenchit BTS

Park Hyatt Bangkok is the hotel for travelers who want a large, quiet room and a Skytrain platform in the same building. It fills most of Central Embassy on Wireless Road, connects straight to Ploenchit BTS station and the Central Embassy mall, and its 222 rooms start at 48 square meters. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Two MICHELIN Keys. The trade-offs are just as clear: there is no river here, the spa is run by an outside company, and most of the hotel's evening life happens in one three-level venue near the top of the tower.

This is an editorial review built from the hotel's published information and the MICHELIN Guide, not from a stay. Check availability on Expedia.

Location and getting around

Central Embassy is hard to miss: a silver-shingled tower whose shape, according to the MICHELIN Guide, draws on the form of local pagodas. The hotel occupies the upper part of it, with the mall below and a direct link to Ploenchit station on the BTS Sukhumvit line. That link is the whole case for the location. Siam, where the Sukhumvit and Silom lines meet, is two stops away, and the Sukhumvit corridor runs east without a change, so a day of shopping or meetings rarely needs a car.

The immediate neighborhood is Bangkok's embassy and department-store quarter. Central Chidlom is about 0.2 miles away by the hotel's own figure, and the Ratchaprasong intersection, home of the Erawan Shrine, is a short hop west. The hotel also points guests toward the Jim Thompson House, the canal-side home of the "Thai Silk King," a few minutes' walk from BTS National Stadium. For the Grand Palace and the river, expect to change at Siam for the Silom line to Saphan Taksin and continue by boat, or take a taxi and accept the traffic. Drivers get free parking.

Rooms and suites

The 48-square-meter entry rooms are the headline; the hotel says they are among the largest standard rooms in the city, and that is the main reason to choose it over a similar tower hotel nearby. The style is contemporary and pared back, with floor-to-ceiling windows over the skyline. Above them sit 32 suites, running from the Park Suite through the Governor, Diplomat and Ambassador Suites to the Presidential Suite, and connecting combinations are offered for families.

One perk is worth pricing up. The Executive Retreat at The Park is a daily lounge-style arrangement, with a live-station lunch, afternoon tea and evening bites with drinks. It is included with the premium and specialty suites and can be bought as a package with other rooms, so if you would eat two of those three meals in the hotel anyway, compare the package against a standard room plus dining. Check-in can be done digitally, and the room key can live on your phone.

Dining and bars

The hotel keeps its food and drink to four venues, and one of them does most of the work. Penthouse Bar + Grill, designed by AvroKO as the apartment of an imagined adventurer and art collector, stacks a grill restaurant, a cocktail bar with live music and a whisky room over three floors, and tops them with an open-air Rooftop Bar on level 36. The grill cooks meat and seafood over organic charcoal in a KOPA oven and a parrilla under chef Marco Chávez Jaime, and the drinks program is led by mixologist Fabio Brugnolaro. It is the reason many guests never leave the building in the evening.

Embassy Room La Marina is the Italian option, cooking coastal dishes for lunch, dinner and an à la carte Sunday brunch, and the Embassy Room is also where breakfast is served. The Living Room is the all-day lounge under large art installations, with Thai and international comfort food, barista coffee and afternoon tea. Exclusive Sweets at The Park sells cakes, cookies and chocolates to take away. Smart casual dress applies at La Marina and The Living Room.

None of the hotel's restaurants appears in the MICHELIN restaurant selection, so if a destination dinner is on your list, look outside. Paste Bangkok, the refined Thai restaurant that the MICHELIN Guide lists among its selected Bangkok restaurants, is in Gaysorn Centre on Phloen Chit Road, a short ride along the same BTS line.

Pool, spa and fitness

The pool is better suited to swimmers than most city-hotel pools: 40 meters of saltwater, including a 25-meter infinity-edge lap section, with loungers, cabanas and terraced gardens around it. The fitness center is on level 11, open 24 hours, equipped by Technogym, and looks over the garden terrace.

The spa is PAÑPURI ORGANIC SPA, which the hotel says it does not operate. In practice that means you book treatments with the spa directly and spending there does not earn World of Hyatt points, a detail that matters to loyalty-program travelers who expect to charge everything to the room.

Families, pets and accessibility

Families can book connecting room combinations, and the entry rooms are big enough to take a cot without feeling cramped. We found no children's club among the hotel's published facilities, so younger children will rely on the pool and the malls downstairs. Pets are not allowed. The hotel pages we could read do not describe accessible room types in detail, so travelers who need step-free bathrooms or other adaptations should confirm them with the hotel before booking.

Who it suits, and the alternatives

Park Hyatt Bangkok suits business travelers who move around by BTS, shoppers who want the malls on a lift ride, couples who like a contemporary room with space, and anyone who plans to end the evening on a rooftop without a taxi home. It is a weaker choice for a river-focused first visit, for pet owners, for families who want a kids' club, and for spa-goers who want their treatments to count toward hotel points.
